Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER EXISTED

Evelyn Carter did not scream.
She stood in the bedroom doorway, the ultrasound picture trembling between her fingers while Damon slowly buttoned his shirt.
Behind the partially open closet door, Claire Bennett held her breath.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Damon forced a smile.
"Evelyn... this isn't what you think."
The ultrasound slipped onto the hardwood floor.
"My baby..." Evelyn whispered.
"I wanted to surprise you."
Claire finally stepped out.
Her lipstick was smudged.
Her engagement ring flashed beneath the bedroom lights.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly.
"You don't get to be sorry."
Evelyn turned and walked away before either of them could touch her.
Three hours later, she sat alone in her office.
She replayed every conversation she'd ever had with Claire.
The birthdays.
The vacations.
The nights they cried together after Evelyn lost her mother.
Everything suddenly felt rehearsed.
Then her attorney, Margaret Lawson, arrived.
"I've already frozen your personal accounts."
Evelyn frowned.
"I never asked you to."
Margaret placed a thick envelope on the desk.
"You didn't."
"But someone else did."
Inside was a petition filed only two days earlier.
Emergency Guardianship Request.
Applicant:
Damon Carter.
Reason:
"Mrs. Evelyn Carter is suffering from pregnancy-related psychological instability and has become incapable of managing her business affairs."
Attached were psychiatric evaluations.
Medical reports.
Witness statements.
Every signature looked authentic.
Except...
every document was fake.
"He was trying to declare me mentally incompetent," Evelyn whispered.
Margaret nodded.
"If approved, he would immediately gain legal control of your company."
"And my child?"
Margaret hesitated.
"He could also petition for temporary custody after birth."
Evelyn's blood turned cold.
The affair had never been the goal.
It had been the distraction.
That evening, she searched Damon's home office.
Hidden behind a row of legal textbooks she found a small brass key.
Number 317.
No bank name.
Only a serial number.
The next morning she rented a private investigator.
By sunset they located the matching safety deposit vault.
Inside...
there wasn't cash.
There were hard drives.
Birth certificates.
Company ownership records.
And dozens of voice recordings.
One recording changed everything.
Claire's voice.
"I've been with her almost five years."
Damon laughed.
"Good."
"She trusts you completely."
"When the baby arrives..."
"...everything becomes ours."
Evelyn nearly collapsed.
Claire hadn't become her best friend.
May you like
She had been planted.
From the beginning.
