Chapter 6 - Justice Served

The courtroom was packed to capacity. The trial of Ryan and Linda was the most highly publicized event in Chicago that year. The sheer mountain of evidence compiled by Colonel Bennett and federal investigators left the defense with absolutely no room to maneuver.
The audio recordings of the abuse, the financial records of the stolen inheritance, the medical reports, and the footage of Ryan's attempted kidnapping in the parking garage were presented one by one.
The most powerful moment of the trial, however, was when Emily took the stand.
She wore a simple, elegant blue dress, her pregnancy prominent and beautiful. She looked calm, her eyes steady as she looked directly at Ryan and Linda, who sat at the defense table. Ryan refused to meet her gaze, staring down at his hands, while Linda looked pale and defeated.
"For months, I was told I was weak," Emily testified, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom. "I was told that my pain didn't matter, that my voice didn't matter. They tried to make me believe that I was completely alone in the dark. But they forgot one very important thing: my father taught me how to survive. I am not a victim anymore. I am a survivor, and I am a mother. And my child will grow up knowing what real strength looks like."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
The verdict was read aloud: Guilty on all counts.

Ryan was sentenced to twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary with no possibility of parole, while Linda was sentenced to ten years for her role as an accomplice, conspiracy, and financial fraud. As they were led away in handcuffs, Ryan looked back at Emily one last time, his eyes filled with regret, but she had already turned her back to him, looking only at her father.
Outside the courtroom, reporters swarmed the steps. But Colonel Bennett and Emily bypassed the crowd, walking hand-in-hand toward a waiting car, leaving the circus behind them. The battle was finally over.
