Chapter 5 - The Art of the Counter-Strike

"You think you're smart, Valerie?" Victoria sneered, trying to salvage her shattered dignity. "You're a middle-class architect. You don't have the power to take us down. We have judges in our pocket. We have the mayor on speed dial. By tomorrow, your little police report will disappear, and you'll be blacklisted from every architectural firm in Colorado."

"I expected you to say that," Valerie replied calmly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone. She tapped the screen, turning on a live audio broadcast.

"What is that?" Diego asked, his voice cracking.

"This is a direct stream to the Denver District Attorney’s Office, specifically to the White Collar Crime Division," Valerie explained. "I’ve been sharing my screen and audio with them since I walked into this room. Hello, Detective Vance."

A voice crackled through the phone’s speaker. "We hear you loud and clear, Valerie. We have recorded the extortion attempt and the admission of financial distress."

Richard Sterling collapsed into his leather chair, clutching his chest. "You... you trapped us."

"You trapped yourselves when you cracked a plate over my head because you thought I was weak," Valerie said, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "But here is my offer. And it is not negotiable."

She slid a single document across the table.

"This is a full confession of financial fraud, signed by Richard and Victoria. You will also sign a document transferring 100% of Sterling & Sons' remaining assets—including the Capitol Hill development contract—to a newly formed holding company under my name."

"You're insane!" Victoria screamed. "That's our entire legacy!"

"Your legacy is built on lies, theft, and domestic violence," Valerie snapped. "If you sign, I will ask the DA to show leniency during your sentencing. You might get to serve your time in a minimum-security facility. If you don't sign, I press the send button on my email, and federal agents will raid this office within thirty minutes. Diego will go to a maximum-security prison for felony assault, and both of you will die in a federal penitentiary."

The room was deathly quiet. The only sound was the hum of the air conditioning and the heavy, terrified breathing of the Sterling family.

Diego looked at his father, then at his mother. "Dad... please. Sign it. I can't go back to jail. Those people... they knew who I was. They treated me like..." He broke down, weeping into his hands.

Richard Sterling looked at Valerie. For the first time, he saw her not as a nuisance, not as an outsider, but as the predator who had completely outmaneuvered him.

With shaking hands, Richard reached for his gold fountain pen.
