Chapter 6 - The True Definition of Growth

The air in the Brooklyn botanic garden was warm and sweet, filled with the scent of blooming cherry blossoms and fresh, damp earth.

It was June, and the sun was setting over the city, casting a beautiful, golden-orange glow over the green canopy.

I stood in the center of the terrace, holding a beautiful, two-month-old baby girl in my arms. She had soft, dark hair and bright, curious blue eyes that looked out at the world with absolute trust.

"She looks just like you, Madeline," my mother said, smiling as she gently adjusted the baby’s sun hat. My parents had flown in from Oregon for the baby's dedication ceremony, and they were staying in the guest suite of our townhouse.

"She has her father's eyes," I said, looking down at her.

And by father, I didn't mean Travis. Travis was currently serving a three-year sentence in federal prison, his name erased from my daughter's birth certificate.

I meant the man who was currently walking toward us down the stone path, holding a small bouquet of lavender and a bottle of milk.

Cole Harrington walked up to us, his face lit with a smile so bright it eclipsed the setting sun. He reached out, his finger gently tracing the soft cheek of our daughter, Chloe.

"Hey there, my beautiful girls," Cole whispered, leaning down to kiss my cheek, then gently kissing Chloe’s forehead.

"She was waiting for you," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder.

My parents smiled and excused themselves, walking back toward the main pavilion to give us some quiet time.

Cole looked out at the beautiful garden, then back at me, his eyes filled with a deep, infinite devotion. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, dark green velvet box.

He opened it to reveal a stunning, raw emerald ring, set in a delicate band of recycled rose gold—a design that perfectly matched my love for the earth and organic beauty.

"Madeline," Cole said, his voice soft but filled with absolute certainty. "For years, I watched you design gardens that brought life back to a cold city. But over the last nine months, you’ve brought life, love, and light back to my heart. I don't want to just be your partner in business. I want to build a life with you, an unbreakable sanctuary where our daughter can grow up knowing what real love looks like. Will you marry me?"

I looked at the ring, then up at the man who had rescued me from the dark, respected my intellect, and loved me and my daughter with a fierce, unconditional protectiveness.

"Yes, Cole," I whispered, tears of pure, uncomplicated happiness shining in my eyes. "A thousand times, yes."

As he slipped the emerald onto my finger and pulled me and Chloe into his warm, strong embrace, the harbor horns sounded in the distance, celebrating the beautiful, resilient life we had built from the ashes of a cold past.

The garden around us was blooming, and for the first time in my life, I knew that my roots were deep, my branches were strong, and my future was completely, beautifully secure.
