Chapter 4 - Ambush at the Gates

By the time my sedan screeched to a halt outside Lincoln Elementary, three black vehicles were already idling near the bus loading zone.
Parents were lined up along the sidewalk, waiting for the afternoon dismissal bell. Standing near the front flagpole was Derek Vance, dressed in an expensive designer coat, accompanied by two men in dark suits holding legal papers.
"Derek!" I yelled, slamming my car door shut and running across the lawn.
Derek turned, a smug, triumphant smile spreading across his face as he adjusted his sunglasses. "Hello, Paige. Right on time."
"Get away from this school!" I shouted, attracting the attention of several teachers and parents standing nearby. "You don't have custody!"
"Actually, I do," Derek sneered, stepping forward and handing a piece of paper to the school principal, who had just walked out of the front office. "This is an emergency temporary custody order signed by Judge Harrison Vance two hours ago. It grants me immediate, exclusive possession of my daughter, Hailey Vance."
Principal Higgins looked at the document, his brow furrowing with confusion. "Mrs. Vance... this looks like a valid court order."
"It's a fraudulent order signed by his uncle!" I cried out, my hands trembling as I pointed at Derek. "He and his mother burned my daughter's hands two weeks ago! The criminal charges are pending!"
"She's lying, Principal Higgins," Derek said smoothly, stepping toward the main doors as the bell rang and children began filing out. "My ex-wife is suffering from a severe psychotic episode. My security team is here to ensure Hailey’s safe transfer to my vehicle."
Hailey walked out through the double glass doors, her backpack slung over her shoulder, her bandaged right hand tucked carefully inside her coat pocket. The moment she saw Derek and his security men, her face went deathly pale.
"Daddy?" she whimpered, backing away toward her teacher.
"Come here, sweetie," Derek said, his voice dripping with artificial warmth as he reached out to grab her arm. "Dad's taking you home to Grandma's."
"NO!" Hailey screamed, terror tearing through her throat! "DON'T LET HIM TAKE ME! MOMMY! MOMMY!"
"Grab her," Derek ordered his security guards coldly, his polite facade dropping instantly!
One of the dark-suited men lunged forward, reaching for Hailey’s collar!
Before his hand could touch her, a heavy black SUV swerved onto the school lawn, kicking up dirt and grass, blocking the security guard’s path with a deafening screech of tires!
The doors flew open! Caleb and two uniformed Maricopa County Sheriff deputies stepped out, weapons drawn!
"STEP AWAY FROM THE CHILD!" Deputy Martinez shouted over his loudspeaker!
Derek froze, his hands dropping to his sides in shock. "What is this?! I have a court order from Judge Vance!"
Evelyn Cross stepped out from the passenger side of Caleb’s SUV, holding a brightly colored folder sealed with the golden seal of the Arizona Supreme Court.
"That order was stayed ten minutes ago by the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, Derek," Evelyn announced, her voice ringing clearly across the crowded school yard. "Judge Harrison Vance has been officially recused from this case for judicial misconduct, and an emergency federal protective order has been issued for Hailey Miller."

Derek’s face drained of every bit of color. "What... what are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the fact that your mother’s bank accounts were frozen thirty minutes ago by the FBI," Evelyn smiled coldly. "And you, Derek... are about to be served."
