CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO FINALLY LOOKED UP
Jack ran for the escalator.
The blonde woman called after him, but he did not stop.
Carol grabbed his sleeve and hissed something in his ear.
Ashley stared at me from below with the same hatred she usually reserved for people who told her no.
I stayed where I was.
By the time Jack reached the upper level, he was breathing hard.
“Megan.”
I looked at him.
Up close, he did not look like a surgeon called into emergency work.
He looked like a man dressed for first class.
His collar was open.
His suitcase tag matched the blonde woman’s.
There was sunscreen in the side pocket.
“Megan, this is not what it looks like.”
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because even at the end, he still reached for the laziest lie.
“What hospital were you at?” I asked.
His face twitched.
“Megan, listen to me.”
“What patient?”
He lowered his voice.
“Don’t do this here.”
“You did this here.”
People were starting to notice.
A family with luggage slowed near the railing.
A businessman glanced over from the charging station.
Jack stepped closer.
“Come home. We’ll talk privately.”
“No.”
His eyes sharpened.
There it was.
The version of Jack he saved for rooms without witnesses.
“Megan,” he said softly, “you need to think very carefully. You don’t want to embarrass yourself.”
For ten years, that line had worked.
It made me quiet at dinner parties.
Quiet in front of his mother.
Quiet when he forgot anniversaries, missed appointments, and came home smelling like unfamiliar perfume.
But the woman standing upstairs in Terminal C was not the woman who had spent a decade swallowing humiliation to keep a marriage alive.
“I already thought carefully,” I said. “That’s why Gerald has the file.”
The color drained from his face.
“You called Gerald?”
“Yes.”
“You had no right.”
That time I did smile.
“I had every right. It was my money, my trust, my signature, and my life you built this lie on.”
Jack looked down at his phone again.
Another notification appeared.
Then another.
His hospital board.
The bank.
His accountant.
The trust office.
Carol reached the top of the escalator behind him, furious and pale.
“How dare you do this to this family?” she snapped.
I turned to her.
“This family booked a vacation with my husband and his mistress while asking me to watch your dog.”
Carol’s mouth tightened.
Ashley appeared beside her.
“You’re being dramatic.”
I looked at Jack.
“Who is she?”
He swallowed.
The blonde woman had reached the upper level now. Her confidence was gone.
“I didn’t know he was still married,” she said quickly.
Carol shot her a look.
Ashley whispered, “Don’t.”
That was enough.
I looked back at the woman.
“They all knew,” I said.
Her face went white.
Jack reached for my hand.
I stepped back before he could touch me.
That tiny movement changed everything.
May you like
Because Jack finally understood I was not asking for an explanation.
I was witnessing the end.
