Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Armor

Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Armor
The rain began shortly after they left the boutique.
Heavy drops struck the windows of the black luxury car, creating a quiet rhythm that filled the silence between them.
Mia sat in the back seat beside Lorenzo, holding a small stuffed rabbit that she always carried with her.
Karen sat across from them.
She had tried to refuse the ride.
Several times.
But Lorenzo Rossi had a way of making refusal feel almost impossible.
Not because he forced people.
Because he spoke with such certainty that everyone around him naturally followed.
Now, however, Karen wondered if she had made a mistake.
The man sitting across from her was impossible to understand.
One moment, he was a terrifying businessman who could freeze an entire room with a single sentence.
The next, he was gently adjusting Mia’s jacket because she looked uncomfortable.
Two completely different people.
And somehow, both were real.
“Why are you staring?”
Lorenzo suddenly asked.
Karen blinked.
“I wasn’t.”
“You were.”
His calm confidence annoyed her slightly.
“You’re very sure of yourself.”
“I usually am.”
“That must be convenient.”
A faint flicker appeared in his eyes.
Almost amusement.
“Most people don’t speak to me that way.”
“Most people are probably afraid of losing something.”
“And you aren’t?”
Karen looked out the window.
“I already lost my job today.”
For the first time, Lorenzo had no immediate response.
The words landed somewhere deeper.
Because he recognized that tone.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Acceptance.
The kind of acceptance people developed when they had been disappointed too many times.
Mia suddenly leaned toward Karen.
“Will you sing again?”
Karen smiled.
“Are you asking?”
Mia nodded seriously.
Lorenzo watched.
He noticed how Mia’s entire body relaxed around her.
That was unusual.
Very unusual.
“She doesn’t normally trust strangers,” he said.
Karen lowered her voice.
“Maybe she knew I wasn’t treating her like a stranger.”
The sentence was simple.
But Lorenzo became quiet.
Because it reminded him of someone.
Someone from years ago.
Someone who used to say the same thing.
A woman who believed people didn’t need to be fixed.
They needed to be understood.
His older sister.
Mia’s mother.
Isabella Rossi.
The woman who had died three years ago.
The memory appeared suddenly.
Her laugh.
Her warmth.
The way she protected her daughter.
And the promise Lorenzo made beside her hospital bed.
Protect Mia.
No matter what.
The car became silent.
Karen noticed the change.
She had seen powerful people before.
But she had never seen someone look so alone.
“Your sister,” she said carefully.
Lorenzo’s eyes lifted.
“What about her?”
Karen hesitated.
“Mia reminds you of her.”
A dangerous silence followed.
His driver looked forward, pretending not to hear.
Everyone who worked for Lorenzo knew one rule.
Never mention Isabella Rossi.
Never.
But Karen did.
And somehow, she was still safe.
Lorenzo looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said:
“Yes.”
One word.
But this time, it carried grief.
“She was the only person who could tell me I was wrong.”
Karen smiled slightly.
“That sounds difficult.”
“It was.”
“You miss her.”
The answer came immediately.
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
No pride.
Just truth.
Karen looked at Mia.
“She must have been amazing.”
“She was.”
A pause.
“She was too good for this world.”
There was something painful in the way he said it.
Karen wanted to ask more.
But she stopped herself.
Some wounds were not opened by force.
They were opened by trust.
The car eventually stopped in front of an enormous mansion.
Karen stared.
She knew Lorenzo was wealthy.
Everyone knew.
But seeing his home was different.
The gates alone looked like they belonged to a palace.
Mia looked excited.
“Karen, come inside.”
Karen laughed softly.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
Mia’s expression immediately changed.
Not dramatically.
Just slightly.
But Lorenzo noticed.
He always noticed.
“She wants you here.”
Karen looked at him.
“That doesn’t mean I should.”
“Why not?”
“Because this is your world.”
She gestured toward the mansion.
“And I’m not part of it.”
Lorenzo stepped out of the car.
Rain fell around him.
His expression was unreadable.
“Maybe that’s exactly why.”
Karen frowned.
“What does that mean?”
He looked at the mansion behind him.
A place filled with wealth.
But also silence.
A place where every room was beautiful and every memory was painful.
“It means this house has had too many people who wanted something from me.”
His eyes returned to hers.
“And you are the first person today who wanted nothing.”
Karen didn’t know how to respond.
Before she could answer, Mia reached for her hand.
“Please?”
That small voice defeated her.
Not Lorenzo.
Mia.
Karen sighed.
“Fine. Just for a little while.”
A tiny smile appeared on Mia’s face.
Lorenzo noticed.
And something unfamiliar moved inside him.
Relief.
Inside the mansion, Karen expected coldness.
Instead, she found quiet.
Not empty.
Quiet.
There were photographs everywhere.
Family photographs.
Mia laughing.
Isabella holding her.
A younger Lorenzo standing beside them.
Karen stopped.
She stared at one particular picture.
Lorenzo looked completely different.
Younger.
Less guarded.
Actually happy.
“You look different.”
Lorenzo followed her gaze.
“I was.”
“What happened?”
He looked away.
“Life.”
The answer was simple.
But not enough.
Karen turned.
“You always answer like that?”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re giving a statement during a business meeting.”
He almost smiled.
“Maybe I am.”
“You know, you’re not as scary as people think.”
That made him look at her.
“Careful.”
“Is that a threat?”
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“It’s a warning.”
“About what?”
“That people who see behind the armor usually regret it.”
The words were quiet.
Almost sad.
Karen studied him.
“Maybe because they don’t like what they find?”
Lorenzo said nothing.
Because she was close.
Too close.
The truth was simple.
He had spent years building armor.
After losing Isabella.
After being betrayed by people he trusted.
After discovering that kindness could be used as a weapon against him.
He became untouchable.
Cold.
Unreachable.
But then a woman appeared in a shopping mall.
A woman who sat on the floor.
A woman who sang to his niece.
A woman who looked at him like he was just another person.
Not a billionaire.
Not Lorenzo Rossi.
Just Lorenzo.
And that terrified him more than any enemy.
Later that evening, Mia finally fell asleep.
Karen sat beside her bed, making sure she was comfortable.
Lorenzo stood at the doorway.
Watching.
“She trusts you.”
Karen turned.
“She’s a wonderful child.”
“She is.”
A pause.
“Thank you for staying.”
Karen smiled.
“You already thanked me.”
“I know.”
“Then why again?”
Lorenzo looked at Mia.
“Because once is not enough.”
The answer was unexpectedly honest.
Karen looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Lorenzo’s phone rang.
The expression on his face changed immediately.
The warmth disappeared.
The businessman returned.
He answered.
“What?”
A voice spoke from the other end.
Karen couldn’t hear everything.
Only Lorenzo’s reaction.
His face became colder.
“What do you mean the documents were leaked?”
A pause.
His jaw tightened.
“Find who did it.”
Another pause.
Then:
“No.”
His eyes moved toward Mia.
His voice became dangerously calm.
“Do not involve my family.”
He ended the call.
Karen noticed.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“That was clearly not nothing.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“You ask too many questions.”
“And you avoid answering all of them.”
For a second, silence.
Then something unexpected happened.
Lorenzo laughed.
Quietly.
Barely.
But he laughed.
Karen stared.
“You actually can do that.”
“Do what?”
“Laugh.”
His expression returned to normal.
“I’m capable of many things.”
“Good. I was starting to wonder.”
The moment was brief.
But neither of them forgot it.
Because something had changed.
A wall had moved.
Just slightly.
Neither realized it yet…
But someone else was watching.
Someone who had been waiting for years.
Someone who knew Lorenzo Rossi’s greatest weakness.
And that weakness was no longer just Mia.
It was Karen Miller.
Across the city, inside a dark office, a man stared at photographs on a table.
One of them was Lorenzo.
Another was Karen.
The man smiled.
“So…”
He whispered.
“The untouchable Lorenzo Rossi finally found someone who can hurt him.”
He picked up his phone.
“Begin.”
A pause.
“And this time…”
May you like
His smile disappeared.
“Destroy everything.”
