Chapter 3 - The Search for the Truth

By sunrise the next morning, the story had begun to break across local Des Moines news outlets. A prominent local matriarch and her daughter held in Polk County Jail under heavy felony charges involving the torture of a newborn baby and his mother was the kind of story that burned through the city like wildfire.
Leo hadn't slept a single second. He sat in a vinyl armchair between Grace's hospital bed and little Sam's incubator in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The baby’s fever had finally broken, his core temperature stabilizing at a healthy 98.6 degrees, though he remained on oxygen and IV nutritional support. Grace was sleeping deeply under the influence of strong antibiotics and pain medication.
At 8:00 AM, a soft knock sounded on the room door.
Leo stood up quietly, checking on Sam before slipping out into the hallway. Standing outside was Marcus Reynolds, a tall, sharp-eyed attorney wearing a tailored charcoal suit, holding a thick leather briefcase. Beside him was Detective Sarah Jenkins from the Des Moines Special Victims Unit.
"Mr. Sullivan?" Marcus asked, extending a firm hand. "I am Marcus Reynolds. I was retained late last night by your wife’s father, David."
Leo blinked, surprised. Grace's father lived in Chicago and had been estranged from the family for years due to a complex divorce, but news of the incident had clearly reached him.
"Thank you for coming, Mr. Reynolds," Leo said, his voice raspy with exhaustion. "Detective Jenkins."
"Mr. Sullivan," Detective Jenkins said, opening her official notebook. "We executed a search warrant on your residence three hours ago. What my forensics team found in that house goes far beyond a simple case of neglect."
Leo felt a cold chill run down his spine. "What do you mean?"
"We recovered your wife’s cell phone hidden inside the bottom of your mother’s handbag," Detective Jenkins reported. "We also found two cotton kitchen towels in the master bedroom trash can that tested positive for Grace’s skin cells and fiber traces matching the headboard. But the most disturbing discovery was found in your mother’s car parked in your driveway."
Marcus opened his leather briefcase, pulling out a manila folder filled with financial documents and printed digital correspondence.
"Leo," Marcus said grimly. "Did you know your mother opened three separate line-of-credit accounts using your Social Security number over the last six months?"
Leo froze. "What? No. I’ve never authorized anyone to use my credit."
"She forged your signature on a quitclaim deed draft for your current home," Marcus explained, handing him a printed document bearing a terrible, crude forgery of Leo's handwriting. "Your mother was severely in debt. She owed over $140,000 to private lenders and credit agencies due to years of failed real estate investments and luxury spending that she hid from you and your sister."
Leo stared at the forged documents, his mind spinning into complete vertigo.
"Her plan wasn't just to force you to buy a house in her name," Detective Jenkins added. "She was actively planning to declare Grace unfit as a mother due to 'postpartum depression,' use that to gain legal custody of baby Sam, and then convince you to turn over complete power of attorney over your bank accounts and assets to her."
Leo felt as if he had stepped off a cliff into an abyss of absolute madness. "She... she wanted to take my son?"
"She wanted control of everything you owned," Marcus said coldly. "She viewed Grace as the only obstacle standing between her and complete control over your life and your financial future. When Grace refused to hand over your savings for the house down payment months ago, your mother realized she couldn't manipulate her. So she decided to break her physically and mentally while you were out of state."
Tears of pure, unadulterated fury welled up in Leo’s eyes. The woman who had given him life, the woman he had spent his entire adulthood trying to please and respect, had viewed his wife and child as nothing more than cattle to be manipulated and sacrificed for her own greed.
"Where are they now?" Leo asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
"They are currently being processed at the county jail," Detective Jenkins replied. "Their arraignment hearing is set for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM before Judge Brenda Vance. Given the overwhelming physical evidence and the severity of the charges, we are asking for high bail."
Leo looked through the glass window of the hospital room at his sleeping wife and his tiny son lying in the incubator.
"No," Leo said, turning back to the attorney and detective with an absolute, terrifying clarity in his eyes. "High bail isn't enough. I want them held without bail. I want every single transaction, every single message, and every single crime they’ve ever committed laid out in front of that judge."

"I am already drafting the emergency protective orders," Marcus said with a sharp, professional nod. "They will never step foot within a thousand feet of your wife or son again. But Leo... you need to prepare yourself. Tomorrow morning is going to be a war."
"Good," Leo whispered, closing his fists until his knuckles turned white. "Because I'm done being a coward."
