Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

The pediatric wing of Atlanta Memorial Hospital was quiet, but for Madeline, it was the first safe haven she had known in two years.
Liam had been bathed, his matted hair gently washed by a sympathetic nurse, and his cuts and scrapes treated. He was currently fast asleep in a sterile white crib, his tiny hand still gripping the blue plush dog, Patch. The pediatric resident had confirmed what Madeline already knew: severe malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, and profound psychological trauma. But he was alive, and he was safe.
Madeline sat in a chair beside the crib, her laptop open on her knees. The dark circles under her eyes spoke of her exhaustion, but her fingers flew across the keyboard with ruthless, calculated precision.
She was the Chief Operating Officer of Harlan Logistics. While Jeffrey had his name on the building, Madeline was the one who had built the proprietary supply-chain software that made the company a global player. She was the one who had spent the last two years in London securing a fifty-million-dollar European distribution contract that was set to go live in forty-eight hours.
At 8:00 AM, her phone rang. It was Arthur Pendelton, the chairman of the board of Harlan Logistics.
"Madeline," Arthur said, his voice grave. "I've been trying to reach Jeffrey all morning. He’s not answering his cell, and his mother called the office screaming about police and lawyers. What on earth is going on?"
"Jeffrey is currently in a holding cell at the Fulton County Jail, Arthur," Madeline said, her voice steady and clear. "He, his mother, and his assistant, Cynthia Vance, were arrested last night. They are being charged with felony child cruelty, neglect, and conspiracy to commit domestic abuse."
A heavy gasp sounded on the other end of the line. "Dear God... Liam?"
"Liam is in the hospital," Madeline replied, her eyes softening as she looked at her sleeping son. "He has been severely neglected and abused for the last two years while I was in London saving this company. And Jeffrey used company funds to facilitate it. He placed Cynthia on the corporate payroll as an executive assistant, paid her a six-figure salary out of our operational budget, and used our corporate lease accounts to pay for her personal vehicle."
"This... this is a disaster," Arthur stammered, his voice filled with corporate panic. "The European contract is set to sign tomorrow. If the media gets hold of this, the stock will crater. The European partners will pull out immediately!"
"They won't pull out, Arthur," Madeline said smoothly. "Because Jeffrey is no longer the CEO of Harlan Logistics."
"What do you mean? He owns forty percent of the shares!"
"He owned forty percent," Madeline corrected him. "Under our original incorporation agreement, any partner convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude forfeits their voting rights, and their shares are placed into a blind trust managed by the remaining board members. Furthermore, my personal shares, combined with the proxy votes of the European investment group I secured in London, give me fifty-one percent control of the company."
"Madeline... are you planning a hostile takeover?" Arthur asked, a note of awe and fear entering his voice.
"It’s not hostile, Arthur. It’s a clean-up operation," Madeline said, her eyes turning cold as ice. "I am calling an emergency board meeting for 10:00 AM today. I will be attending via video conference from the hospital. By 11:00 AM, Jeffrey will be officially terminated as CEO, Cynthia will be fired for cause, and I will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer. If the board objects, I will withdraw the European contract, take my proprietary software, and let Harlan Logistics file for bankruptcy by Friday."
Silence stretched over the line as Arthur calculated the chess board. He knew Madeline was the brains of the operation. Without her, the company was nothing but a hollow shell.
"I will notify the other board members," Arthur said quietly. "We will see you online at ten, CEO."

Madeline closed her laptop. She stood up, walking over to the crib to kiss Liam’s forehead. He stirred slightly, a tiny smile appearing on his lips as he smelled her familiar scent.
"The monsters took your voice, my sweet boy," Madeline whispered. "But Mommy is going to use mine to tear their world down."
