Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Six months later.

The courtroom was packed for the sentencing hearing. Jason Warren sat in an orange jumpsuit, his head bowed, his expensive hair unkempt. The arrogance had completely drained from him. He had pled guilty to avoid a life sentence, receiving twenty-five years without the possibility of parole.

Sylvia sat at the defense table next to him. Because of my statement to the court regarding her manipulation by Jason, the judge had been lenient, sentencing her to five years in a minimum-security facility followed by extensive probation.

When the gavel dropped, finalizing the sentences, I stood up from the gallery. I didn't look back at them as they were led away in handcuffs.

Outside the courthouse, the sun was shining brightly, casting a warm, golden glow over the city. The air smelled crisp and clean, like the aftermath of a heavy storm that had finally washed away all the filth.

Kim was waiting for me at the bottom of the stone steps. "How are you holding up, Karina?"

"I’ve never felt lighter, Kim," I said, offering her a genuine smile. "For the first time in years, I feel like myself again."

"So, what's next for the legendary state toxicologist? Re-entering retirement?"

"Not quite," I laughed softly. "I’ve realized retirement makes me too much of a target. I’ve accepted a position as a guest lecturer at the university’s forensic department. I start next week. I want to teach the next generation how to catch the monsters who think they can hide in the shadows."

"And your estate?"

"I’ve legally transferred the entire value of the property into a trust fund," I replied proudly. "When I pass, every single cent will go toward funding scholarships for underprivileged students entering the field of forensic science. But before that... I have one last piece of business to take care of."

An hour later, I sat in a beautiful, upscale café on the opposite side of town. Across from me sat Elias, the young waiter. He looked nervous, fidgeting with his napkin.

"Thank you for meeting me, Elias," I said, pushing a thick, embossed envelope across the table toward him.

He blinked, looking at it. "What’s this, Ms. Karina?"

"That is a fully paid, four-year scholarship to the university's pre-med program," I said softly. "The manager told me you were working double shifts to save up for tuition. You saved my life, Elias. You chose honor and morality when it would have been easier to look the other way. It’s time the world rewarded you for that."

Elias stared at the envelope, his eyes welling with tears. He looked up at me, his voice choking up. "I... I don't know what to say. Thank you."

"Don't thank me. Just become a wonderful doctor," I smiled, raising my coffee cup in a toast. "To new beginnings."

Elias raised his cup, clinking it against mine.

As I looked out the window at the bustling, vibrant city, I knew that justice had been served. My family had tried to use my age to make me a victim, but instead, they had reminded me of exactly who I was. I was Karina Warren—and my story was far from over.
