Chapter 3 - The Price of the Substitution

Before Nora could process the absolute shock of Luca's words, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom did not just open—they exploded inward, splintering off their brass hinges.
"Nobody move! Hands where I can see them!" a voice bellowed through the smoke as a blinding flash of white light swallowed the hallway.
Chaos erupted in an instant. The string quartet dropped their instruments, women shrieked in their high-society gowns, and the expensive champagne towers crashed to the marble floor in a shower of crystal and silver. Men in dark tactical gear with no insignia flooded the room, their weapons raised.
Nora’s instinct was to run toward the east wing—toward Evelyn—but her heavy satin train caught on a fallen candelabra. She dropped to her knees, her gold locket striking the marble floor with a sharp clink, spinning away into the darkness. She reached for it frantically, her fingers closing around the warm metal just as a heavy, polished leather shoe stepped into her field of vision.
"Get up," a harsh voice ordered.
But before the intruder could touch her, a deafening roar echoed through the ballroom. Luca DeSantis didn't look for cover. He moved with a terrifying, predator-like speed, his custom Beretta clearing his jacket before Conrad Bennett could even process the noise. Two sharp cracks echoed through the space, and the man standing over Nora collapsed onto the marble floor with a heavy groan.
Luca lunged forward, his large hand catching Nora by the waist. He didn't check to see if she could walk in the restrictive gown; with one massive, effortlessly powerful lift, he hoisted her against his chest, tucking her full body securely against his ribs as if she weighed nothing at all.
"Marco! Clear the northern terrace!" Luca roared over his shoulder to his lead lieutenant, who was already firing a submachine gun into the smoke of the foyer. "The Bennett security detail sold us out! This was an ambush organized by the Langford family!"
"Langford?" Nora gasped, her face pressed against the rough wool of Luca’s tuxedo jacket as he carried her down a narrow service corridor behind the altar. "Vanessa's boyfriend's family?"
"Miles Langford didn't just elope with your sister, piccola," Luca said, his voice entirely steady despite the fact that he was running through a hail of gunfire, his boots pounding against the concrete floor of the mansion’s utility basement. "He used her departure to clear the security grids so his father’s mercenary crew could take out my leadership council in one room. Your father was either too stupid to see it, or he was a part of it."
"He didn't know!" Nora cried out, her hands gripping Luca’s shoulders as the sound of an explosion rocked the foundations above them. "He’s an idiot, Luca, but he’s too much of a coward to cross you like this! Please... my grandmother is in the east wing! We have to go back for her!"
Luca stopped at the heavy steel fire door that led to the private docks behind the estate. He looked down at her face, his gray eyes blazing with a mixture of dark amusement and fierce protectiveness. "My men crossed into the east wing ten minutes before the first vows were spoken, Nora. Evelyn Bennett is already aboard my private yacht, wrapped in a mink blanket and drinking chamomile tea with her private nurse. I told you... I don't leave assets behind."
Relief, sharp and overwhelming, flooded Nora’s chest, causing her tears to finally break through her composure. He had saved her grandmother. Before the wedding even began, he had planned for this.
"Why?" she whispered, staring up at him as the cold Atlantic wind hit them through the open fire door. "Why would you save her? Why would you save me?"
"Because Vanessa Bennett is an empty shell who spends her life looking for approval in a camera lens," Luca said, stepping out onto the floating dock where a heavy, blacked-out midnight cruiser was idling, its twin eight-hundred-horsepower engines purring in the dark water. "But you... you saved this company twelve million dollars in offshore compliance errors last quarter. You’re the brains of the Bennett operation, and in my world, brains are worth more than gold. Your father thought he was giving me his scapegoat to save his skin."

He stepped onto the deck of the boat, carefully lowering Nora onto the leather bench seat before turning to look back at the burning silhouette of the Bennett mansion on the cliff above.
"He just gave me the queen," Luca murmured, his hand resting on the grip of his gun as the boat slammed into gear, launching them into the dark, freezing currents of the Atlantic. "And tomorrow morning, we begin the liquidation."
