Chapter 5 - The Final Trap

Despite Sal Moretti’s arrest, the lingering threat of his splintered syndicate remained.

Three days after the gala, a severe winter blizzard slammed into Chicago, burying the city beneath two feet of snow and ice. High-tension power lines collapsed across Lake County, plunging the Lake Forest estate into pitch-black darkness, powered only by the emergency backup generator.

Inside the nursery, Claire held six-week-old Oliver, humming softly by the light of a battery-operated lantern. The house was eerie and quiet, the wind howling outside like a dying beast.

Suddenly, the lights flickered and died completely.

Even the emergency generator went dead.

Claire froze. Her instincts, honed by weeks of danger, screamed at her that this was not a natural power outage.

"Marcus?" Claire called out softly toward the nursery door.

No answer.

Panic surged through her veins. She quickly placed Oliver into a warm, thermal-lined travel pack, strapping him securely against her chest. She grabbed a heavy brass flashlight and pulled a small, pearl-handled pistol—a gift from Dominic that he had insisted she carry—from her nightstand drawer.

She stepped out into the dark hallway. The floor was freezing cold.

CRASH!

The sound of shattering glass echoed from the ground floor! Gunshots followed—muffled by suppressors—along with the heavy thud of bodies hitting the floor!

Grant Hale had returned.

Leveraging the blizzard and hiring rogue mercenaries left over from the Moretti syndicate, Grant had launched a desperate, suicidal final strike to eliminate Dominic and take Oliver before fleeing the country.

Claire backed away, but footsteps were already rushing up the grand staircase!

"Find the girl and the baby!" Grant’s frantic, insane voice echoed through the dark house. "Kill Dominic, but bring me the boy alive! He’s my golden ticket!"

Claire didn't run toward the main stairs. She knew the layout of the mansion now. She slipped into a hidden service corridor behind the nursery that led down to the estate’s wine cellar and underground garage.

She navigated the pitch-black passage by touch, keeping her hand over Oliver’s mouth so his soft breathing wouldn't betray their location.

Behind her, heavy boots kicked open the nursery door.

"She’s not here!" a mercenary shouted. "Search the halls!"

Claire reached the iron door leading to the wine cellar. She slipped inside and locked the heavy deadbolt from the interior.

The wine cellar was cold, lined with wooden racks holding thousands of vintage bottles. But as she moved toward the exit leading to the garage, a shadow stepped out from behind a concrete pillar.

Grant Hale.

He was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, holding a heavy tactical handgun.

"Hello, Claire," Grant sneered, his voice echoing in the damp cellar. "Did you really think you could outsmart me? You're just a baker from Cicero."

Claire raised her pistol with both hands, aiming it straight at Grant’s chest, her posture unflinching. "Step back, Grant. I won't let you touch him."

Grant laughed—a crazy, hysterical sound. "You won't shoot me. You don't have it in you."

He took a step forward, raising his gun.

BANG!

A shot shattered the dark cellar—not from Claire’s gun, but from the darkness behind Grant!

Grant gasped, dropping his weapon as a bullet tore through his knee! He collapsed onto the cold concrete floor, screaming in agony!

Stepping out from behind a row of wine racks was Dominic. He was bleeding from a cut on his forehead, his shirt torn, but his eyes were pure, terrifying thunder. He carried a heavy shotgun resting over his shoulder.

"Dominic!" Claire cried out in relief.

Dominic didn't look at Grant. He rushed straight to Claire, pulling her and Oliver into his arms, checking them frantically. "Are you hurt? Did he touch you?"

"We're okay," Claire gasped, holding onto him tightly. "We're safe!"

Dominic turned toward his brother, who was squirming on the floor, clutching his bleeding leg.

"Please, Dominic!" Grant whimpered, tears streaming down his face. "We're brothers! Blood! Don't do this!"

Dominic walked over, standing over Grant like an executing judge. The cold rage in his eyes was absolute.

"You tried to poison my son," Dominic said, his voice flat and devoid of any human warmth. "You brought violence into my home. You threatened the woman I love. You are no brother of mine."

Dominic turned to Marcus, who entered the cellar with five fully armed guards.

"Take him away," Dominic ordered coldly. "Deliver him to the federal authorities with the full paper trail of his treason, murder attempts, and embezzlements. Let him spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison cell, forgotten by the world."

"No! Dominic! Please!" Grant screamed as Marcus dragged him away across the concrete floor, his cries fading into the dark corridors.

Dominic turned back to Claire. He took off his warm coat, wrapping it securely around her and Oliver, pulling them against his chest as the storm howled outside.

"It's over, Claire," Dominic whispered into her hair, holding her tight. "It's finally over."
