CHAPTER 2 — THE VIDEO SHE THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD SEE

CHAPTER 2 — THE VIDEO SHE THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD SEE

The moment the ambulance disappeared through the gates, the atmosphere at the villa changed completely.

An hour earlier, the estate had been filled with laughter, music, and champagne.

Now it felt like the scene of a crime.

Guests stood in small clusters, whispering nervously.

Security personnel moved through the property with quiet efficiency.

Phones rang.

Lawyers arrived.

Executives opened laptops.

And at the center of it all stood Vanessa Sinclair.

Alone.

For the first time that evening, she looked afraid.

Not terrified.

Not yet.

But afraid enough to realize something had gone terribly wrong.

She kept repeating the same sentence to anyone willing to listen.

"It was an accident."

Some nodded politely.

Others avoided eye contact.

Most simply walked away.

Because no matter what they believed had happened beside the pool, one fact was now impossible to ignore.

The Bennett family was involved.

And when powerful families became involved, every detail mattered.

Every witness.

Every camera.

Every lie.

Inside the estate's private security office, Richard Hale sat before a wall of monitors.

Three cybersecurity specialists worked beside him.

A young technician typed rapidly.

"The cloud archive is secure."

Richard nodded.

"The pool footage?"

The technician frowned.

"There was an attempt to access the system twenty-three minutes ago."

Everyone in the room looked up.

"What kind of attempt?"

"Remote deletion request."

The room fell silent.

Richard's expression hardened.

"Successful?"

The technician almost laughed.

"No."

He pointed toward the screen.

"The request failed immediately."

"Why?"

"Because the Bennett network doesn't allow local deletion privileges."

Another analyst turned toward them.

"Whoever tried to erase the footage didn't understand the system architecture."

Richard folded his arms.

"So someone knew cameras existed."

"Looks that way."

"And someone panicked."

The technician nodded.

"Definitely."

Richard stared at the monitor.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Because innocent people rarely tried to erase evidence.

Meanwhile, thirty miles away, Emma Bennett lay in a private hospital suite overlooking the city.

The baby's heartbeat echoed softly through the room.

Steady.

Healthy.

The sound felt like a miracle.

Daniel sat beside her bed.

He hadn't changed clothes.

His suit remained damp from the pool.

His hair was still wet.

Neither of them cared.

Emma watched him quietly.

"You should go home."

"No."

"You haven't eaten."

"No."

"You haven't slept."

Still no.

For the first time all evening, a faint smile appeared on her face.

"You're impossible."

Daniel squeezed her hand.

"Probably."

Silence settled between them.

Then Emma spoke.

"I saw her face."

Daniel looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"When she pushed me."

A shadow crossed Emma's expression.

"I keep replaying it."

Her voice grew softer.

"I wasn't even arguing with her."

Daniel listened carefully.

"She walked over."

Emma swallowed.

"She smiled."

The memory clearly disturbed her.

"Then she asked if I was excited about the baby."

Daniel remained silent.

"And when I turned toward the water..."

Emma's hand instinctively moved to her stomach.

"...she shoved me."

The room became very quiet.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Did she say anything?"

Emma nodded slowly.

"One sentence."

"What was it?"

Tears gathered in her eyes.

"'Some people get everything.'"

Daniel's expression darkened instantly.

Because that wasn't anger.

It wasn't frustration.

It was resentment.

Deep resentment.

The kind that grew over years.

Back at the villa, Richard finally received the call he had been waiting for.

"The footage is ready."

Every conversation inside the security office stopped.

The technician transferred the file onto the main screen.

Richard watched carefully.

"Show me everything."

The recording began.

A wide aerial angle overlooked the pool area.

Guests mingled.

Servers moved between tables.

The orchestra played softly.

Then Emma appeared.

She stood near the edge of the infinity pool speaking with several guests.

Relaxed.

Smiling.

Completely unaware of danger.

A second figure entered the frame.

Vanessa.

The room remained silent.

The video continued.

Vanessa approached Emma.

The two women exchanged words.

No argument.

No confrontation.

No raised voices.

Just conversation.

Richard leaned forward.

"Zoom."

The technician enhanced the image.

Emma smiled politely.

Vanessa smiled back.

Then everything changed.

Vanessa glanced around.

Quickly.

Almost instinctively.

Checking who was watching.

The move lasted less than a second.

But it was there.

Then she stepped closer.

Raised both hands.

And shoved.

Hard.

Emma stumbled backward.

Her arms flailed.

She crashed into the water.

Gone.

Several people in the room cursed aloud.

One executive simply stared.

"My God."

The footage continued.

Emma disappeared beneath the surface.

Vanessa remained standing.

Watching.

Not screaming.

Not calling for help.

Watching.

Then Daniel entered the frame and dove into the pool.

The room fell silent.

No one needed additional interpretation.

No one needed expert analysis.

No one needed a lawyer.

The video showed exactly what happened.

A deliberate push.

Nothing accidental about it.

Nothing.

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

"Duplicate everything."

The technician nodded.

"Already done."

"External backups?"

"Six locations."

"Good."

Richard stood.

"Because by morning..."

He looked toward the screen where Vanessa's face remained frozen.

"...every attorney in the country is going to be fighting over this file."

Unfortunately for Vanessa, her problems were only beginning.

Because the footage wasn't the only thing investigators discovered.

At 11:42 PM, one of the cybersecurity analysts found something unexpected.

"Richard."

He looked up.

"What is it?"

The analyst turned his monitor.

"A financial connection."

Richard approached.

Between whom?

The analyst clicked several screens.

"Vanessa Sinclair."

Another click.

"And Harrison Cole."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

Harrison Cole.

The name was familiar.

Dangerously familiar.

One of Bennett Global's most aggressive competitors.

A billionaire investor who had spent years attempting to acquire portions of Daniel's company.

Several hostile takeover attempts.

Several failed lawsuits.

Several public attacks.

None successful.

Richard studied the screen.

"What kind of connection?"

The analyst hesitated.

"Payments."

"How many?"

A long pause.

Then:

"Three point eight million dollars."

The room went silent again.

Richard stared.

"When?"

"Over the last eighteen months."

His mind began racing.

Because suddenly this situation looked very different.

Much bigger.

Much uglier.

A jealous socialite pushing a pregnant woman into a pool was one thing.

A woman receiving millions from a business rival before attempting to harm the wife of a major corporate owner...

That was something else entirely.

At midnight, Daniel received the call.

He stepped into the hospital hallway.

Richard spoke immediately.

"We have the footage."

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"And?"

"You were right."

A pause.

"She pushed Emma."

Daniel didn't respond.

He already knew.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then Richard added:

"There's more."

Daniel looked out the window toward the city lights below.

"What?"

"Harrison Cole."

The name instantly caught his attention.

"What about him?"

"We found financial transfers."

Daniel's expression changed.

"How much?"

"Nearly four million."

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Richard continued.

"We don't know why."

"Yet."

"But we know the money exists."

Daniel's voice became dangerously calm.

"Secure everything."

"Already done."

"Tell no one."

"Understood."

Daniel ended the call.

For several moments, he simply stood there.

Thinking.

Because if Harrison Cole was involved...

Then tonight wasn't merely an attack on Emma.

It might have been part of something much larger.

Something planned.

Something strategic.

Something designed to hurt not only his family—

But everything he had spent twenty years building.

The next morning, the story exploded.

News channels picked it up first.

Then business networks.

Then social media.

Within hours, videos from the gala appeared everywhere.

Most showed only the aftermath.

The splash.

The rescue.

The ambulance.

The black SUVs.

Speculation spread rapidly.

Some called it attempted murder.

Others called it a tragic misunderstanding.

But nobody knew the truth.

Not yet.

Because the actual footage remained locked behind legal protections.

And Richard intended to keep it that way until prosecutors had it.

Vanessa, meanwhile, hired three law firms before breakfast.

By lunch, she was giving interviews.

"It was an accident."

Again.

And again.

And again.

The words sounded weaker each time.

Because deep down, she knew something.

The video existed.

And sooner or later...

The world would see it.

That afternoon, Emma finally fell asleep.

For the first time since the incident.

Daniel sat quietly beside her.

The room was peaceful.

Almost.

His phone vibrated.

A new message.

No sender information.

Only a photograph.

Daniel opened it.

His blood froze.

The image showed Emma entering the gala earlier that evening.

Healthy.

Smiling.

Happy.

Someone had circled her in red.

Below the picture were five words.

"The wrong woman survived."

Daniel stared at the screen.

For one terrifying moment, he couldn't breathe.

Because whoever sent that message wasn't interested in accidents.

Wasn't interested in lawsuits.

Wasn't interested in publicity.

They had wanted Emma dead.

And somewhere beyond the hospital walls...

The person responsible had just revealed something even more frightening.

May you like

They weren't finished yet.

To be continued...
