Chapter 2: The Battle at the Bedside

Chapter 2: The Battle at the Bedside

By 7:00 A.M., Nathan’s luxury SUV pulled into the parking lot of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital. Emma sat in the passenger seat, clutching her backpack like a shield. She was terrified. She kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for this powerful billionaire to tell her that while he pitied her, business was business, and her mother was fired.

Instead, Nathan walked with an aura of absolute authority through the hospital corridors, his long strides forcing Emma to jog slightly to keep up.

When they reached Room 412, Nathan’s heart sank. Sarah Parker, a woman who had always been vibrant, cheerful, and meticulously neat, looked impossibly frail. Half of her face was paralyzed, and her eyes were filled with tears of shame and fear the moment she saw Nathan enter behind her daughter.

"M-Mr... Whitmore," Sarah tried to speak, her voice slurred and weak. "I'm... I'm so sorry. Emma shouldn't... have..."

"Don't speak, Sarah," Nathan interrupted, but his tone was incredibly gentle. He walked straight to the side of her bed and took her cold, frail hand in his. "Emma didn't do anything wrong. She is the most remarkable young woman I have ever met. She kept your secret, and she kept my home immaculate. But the secret ends today."

Before Sarah could panic, the door swung open, and a sharp-faced man in an expensive suit walked in, followed by a doctor. It was Julian Vance, the hospital's Chief financial officer, along with the attending physician.

"Ah, Miss Parker," Julian said, looking at Emma, completely ignoring Nathan who was standing in the shadow of the privacy curtain. "I see you're here. As we discussed yesterday, the 8 A.M. deadline for the surgical deposit has passed. We have prepared the transfer paperwork to move your mother to the county care facility down town."

"You can't do that!" Emma cried out, stepping in front of her mother's bed. "Moving her right now could cause another stroke! The doctor said she needs stability!"

"The doctor also works for a hospital that requires payment, young lady," Julian replied coldly, tapping his clipboard. "We are a business, not a charity. If you can't pay the fifty thousand dollars, we cannot hold this specialized neurological bed."

"She won't be moving anywhere," Nathan’s voice resonated through the small room like a thunderclap.

Julian Vance finally turned his attention to Nathan. He blinked, his cynical expression suddenly faltering as recognition set in. "Mr... Mr. Whitmore? I didn't realize you were here. Is this woman a relative of yours?"

"She is my family," Nathan lied without a single hint of hesitation, his eyes locking onto the CFO with a predatory intensity. "Sarah Parker has been the backbone of my estate for over a decade. And you are telling me that you are willing to risk her life over fifty thousand dollars?"

"Mr. Whitmore, it’s policy—"

"I don't care about your policy, Julian," Nathan snapped, stepping forward. The sheer weight of his billionaire status filled the room, making the CFO look incredibly small. "In fact, let’s talk about policy. Who is the primary donor for the new wing of this very hospital? Who sits on the board of directors of the medical group that owns this facility?"

Julian’s face turned completely white. "You do, sir."

"Exactly," Nathan said, pulling out a sleek black titanium card from his wallet and tossing it onto the clipboard Julian was holding. "Run that card. Put a one-million-dollar endowment on Sarah Parker’s medical account. I want the best neurosurgeon in the state flown in by noon. I want her moved to the VIP penthouse suite on the top floor. And if I hear the word 'transfer' or 'discharge' leave your mouth again, Julian, I will buy this entire hospital just so I can fire you personally before lunch."

Emma gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears spilled over her cheeks. On the bed, Sarah let out a choked sob of pure, overwhelming relief.

Julian swallowed hard, nodding frantically. "Right away, Mr. Whitmore. Right away. Doctor, get the neurosurgeon on the line immediately!"

The hospital staff scrambled out of the room like mice fleeing a cat. The heavy tension in the room evaporated, replaced by a profound, tearful silence.

Emma looked up at Nathan, her body trembling not from exhaustion anymore, but from sheer gratitude. "Mr. Whitmore... I don't know how I will ever pay you back. I’ll work for you for the rest of my life. I’ll clean every day, I’ll—"

"Emma," Nathan interrupted, a genuine, soft smile finally breaking through his stoic features. He placed a hand on her shoulder. "You are not going to clean my house anymore. You have a different job to focus on."

May you like

"What job?" she blinked through her tears.

"Being a seventeen-year-old girl. And getting into Ivy League universities."
