Chapter 4 - The War for the Crown

The attack at the museum destroyed any remaining illusion of peace.

Leo Moretti was dead, but his death threw the Chicago Syndicate into absolute chaos. Rogue captains, hungry for power, began fighting over Moretti’s abandoned territories. The city streets were ablaze with drive-by shootings, arson, and mob retaliation.

Damian placed the Barrington Hills estate under total lockdown.

Steel security shutters sealed the ground-floor windows. Forty elite guards patrolled the grounds day and night. Nobody entered; nobody left.

Inside the fortress, the bond between Damian, Natalie, and Ava grew profound. The shared trauma at the museum had broken down every remaining wall between them. They were no longer a boss, an employee, and a charge; they were a family forged in fire.

Late one night, while a autumn storm raged outside, pounding rain against the reinforced glass, Natalie sat in Damian’s private quarters.

Damian sat on the edge of his king-sized bed, shirtless, while Natalie gently cleaned a long, jagged gash on his shoulder with antiseptic—a memory from the museum firefight that had reopened during his rigorous training sessions.

"Ouch," Damian grunted softly as the rubbing alcohol bit into his skin.

"Stop squirming," Natalie scolded playfully, though her fingers were impossibly tender as she applied a clean white bandage over his muscular shoulder. "You can take down a mob syndicate, but you can't handle a little cotton swab?"

Damian let out a low, husky laugh. He turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers. The banter faded, replaced by an intense, heavy silence that filled the warm room.

"You shouldn't have done it, Natalie," Damian said, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional murmur. "At the museum. You threw yourself over Ava. You could have been killed."

"I would do it again a thousand times," Natalie replied instantly, her hand resting against his warm chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath her palm. "I love her, Damian. I would give my life for her."

Damian reached up, taking her wrist in his large hand. He gently pulled her closer until she was sitting on his lap, her gown swirling around his legs.

"And what about me?" Damian whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes. "What do you feel for me, Natalie?"

Natalie’s heart did a violent flip in her chest. She looked into the eyes of the man who had terrified Chicago, seeing only love, devotion, and a desperate hunger for her.

"I think you already know," she breathed.

Damian didn't wait another second. He cupped the back of her neck, bringing his lips down to hers in a deep, electric kiss.

Natalie gasped softly, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him closer. The kiss was slow, intense, and filled with months of built-up desire and unspoken promises. Damian groaned, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist, lifting her against his chest as if she weighed nothing.

They moved together onto the soft mattress, the storm outside drowned out by the heat of their passion. That night, amidst the fortress of steel and blood, Damian DeLuca claimed Natalie Carter not as a nanny, but as his queen.

Three days later, the calm was shattered.

Frank knocked urgently on the bedroom door at dawn. Damian, dressed in a sleek suit, opened it immediately.

"What is it?" Damian asked.

"The Commission," Frank reported grimly. "The five remaining Don families of the Midwest have called an emergency summit at the historic Drake Hotel tonight. They are holding a vote. If you don't attend, they will declare you a rogue element and unite their forces to wipe out the DeLuca empire."

Damian’s eyes narrowed into slits of deadly steel. "They think they can corner me."

"It’s a trap, Damian," Natalie said, stepping out of the adjoining dressing room, her face pale with worry. "They want you out in the open."

"I know," Damian said, walking over to Natalie, taking her hands, and kissing her lips firmly. "Which is why I am going to end this war tonight. Once and for all."

"Damian, please—"

"Listen to me, Natalie," Damian commanded softly, staring deeply into her eyes. "Frank will remain here with thirty men. The estate is impenetrable. Keep Ava in the underground panic room until I return. By midnight, Chicago will belong to us, or I will be dead. But whatever happens... know that you are my home now."

He kissed her one last time—a deep, searing promise—before turning on his heel and marching down the corridor with his strike team behind him.

Natalie stood at the grand window, watching his motorcade disappear into the pouring rain, a cold dread twisting inside her gut.
