Chapter 3: The Shadow of the Estate

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of media frenzy, legal filings, and hospital security details. The news that the matriarch of the Vanderbilt family had been arrested in her own hospital's maternity ward exploded across social media. TikTok and Facebook were flooded with leaked audio from the hospital staff, and the "Vanderbilt Baby Scandal" became the top trending topic nationwide.

Clara was moved to a secure, private room on the top floor, guarded by two state troopers. For the first time in her life, she wasn't alone. Dr. Harrison stayed by her side, helping her care for the baby, whom Clara officially named Julian Jr.

"You need to see this," Dr. Harrison said on the third morning, handing Clara a tablet.

On the screen was a live press conference. David Vanderbilt—the man Clara had once thought she loved—was standing behind a podium, looking pale and completely broken. He wasn't defending his mother.

"My mother... Evelyn Vanderbilt... acted without my knowledge," David stammered into the microphones, his voice shaking. "I did sign papers, but I was told Clara wanted to give the baby up for adoption to a family out of state. I didn't know about Julian. I didn't know I had a brother."

"He's lying to save his own skin," Clara said, her heart hardening. "He knew his mother was cruel. He just didn't care as long as his allowance wasn't cut."

"He is lying about some things, but not everything," Dr. Harrison sighed, sitting at the foot of her bed. "The board of directors of the Vanderbilt Foundation voted last night to completely remove Evelyn from the chair. They are terrified of the public relations fallout. But more importantly, the yellow folder I gave to the police contains Arthur Vanderbilt's original, unamended will."

Clara frowned. "What does that mean?"

"Arthur knew about Julian," Dr. Harrison revealed. "Before Arthur died five years ago, he felt immense guilt for what Evelyn had done to his illegitimate son. He couldn't find Julian—Evelyn had hidden the foster records too well—but he left a clause in his trust. If Julian Vance or any direct biological descendant of Julian Vance were ever identified through DNA, eighty percent of the entire Vanderbilt family trust, including the real estate holdings and the shipping empire, would automatically revert to them."

Clara gasped, looking down at little Julian Jr., who was currently sleeping peacefully against her chest. "You mean..."

"I mean your son doesn't just have a right to his father's name," Dr. Harrison smiled, a genuine, warm expression. "He is, by law, the wealthiest child in the state. And you, Clara, are his legal guardian. Evelyn didn't just come to that room to take a baby because she wanted a grandson. She knew about Arthur's will. She knew that if the hospital ran that DNA test, she would lose every single dime she owned."

Just then, the door to the room opened, and Detective Vance walked in. His expression was grim.

"We have a problem," the detective said without preamble. "Evelyn's legal team found a loophole in the initial arrest warrant regarding the jurisdiction of the hospital property. She just posted a five-million-dollar cash bail. She's out, Clara. And her private security detail just pulled her out of the city jail twenty minutes ago."

Clara felt a cold dread wash over her. Evelyn was free, and a woman with hundreds of millions of dollars and a history of eliminating obstacles was at her most dangerous when cornered.
