Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Gates

The warehouse on 4th Street was freezing. Damp air clung to the concrete walls, and the single, flickering lightbulb cast long, dancing shadows across the floor.

Leo, the treacherous driver, was tied to a heavy metal chair in the center of the room, his face bruised and bloody from Marcus’s interrogation. When the heavy steel door creaked open, and Julian Vance stepped into the light, Leo began to shake violently.

"Julian! Please!" Leo sobbed, his voice echoing off the concrete. "They threatened my family! Dmitry Petrov said he would kill my sister if I didn't give them the girl’s schedule! I didn't have a choice!"

Julian walked slowly around the chair, his movements smooth and silent, like a predator circling its prey. He didn't carry a weapon. He didn't need one; his bare hands were capable of unspeakable violence.

"Everyone has a choice, Leo," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You chose fifty thousand dollars over the life of my five-year-old daughter. You chose to let assassins open fire on a public patio."

"I didn't know they were going to shoot up the place!" Leo cried. "They said they just wanted to kidnap her! To use her as leverage!"

Julian stopped in front of him, leaning down until his face was just inches from Leo’s. "Who was the shooter?"

"I don't know! I swear to God, I don't know!" Leo screamed. "Dmitry handled the contract himself! But... but I heard them talking on the phone. They said they have someone on the inside. Someone close to you, Julian. Someone who is going to help them get the girl, no matter what!"

Julian’s jaw tightened, a cold fury erupting in his chest. A mole. Someone inside his own organization was feeding information to the Petrovs.

"Marcus," Julian said, standing up and straightening his cuffs. "Clean this up. And secure the estate. No one goes in or out without my personal authorization. The mole is close."

"Yes, boss," Marcus replied, his face grim.

Julian drove back to the estate in a state of hyper-vigilance. His mind was racing, analyzing every captain, every guard, every servant who had access to his home.

By the time he pulled up the long, winding driveway, the sun had already set, leaving the mansion draped in deep, ominous shadows.

As he entered the foyer, he was met by the head housekeeper, a kind, elderly woman named Martha. She looked panicked.

"Mr. Vance! Thank goodness you're back," Martha gasped.

"What is it, Martha?" Julian demanded, his hand instinctively resting on the grip of his concealed firearm.

"It's Clara," Martha said, her voice shaking. "She... she went out to the gardens to get some fresh air. One of the security guards, Thomas, went with her. But... we just found Thomas in the rose bushes. He’s been knocked unconscious, and Clara is gone!"

Julian’s heart stopped. The mole wasn't just feeding information; they were actively operating inside the walls.

Without a word, Julian drew his weapon and sprinted toward the rear exit of the mansion, his mind screaming with a terror he hadn't felt since the day his wife had been taken from him. He had promised to protect Clara. He had dragged her into his war, and now, the monsters had breached the gates.
