Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Crypt

The office went so quiet you could hear the rain beginning to lash against the reinforced glass windows overlooking Manhattan.

Marcus.

My younger brother. The golden boy of the Moretti family. The one who handled our legal fronts, our offshore banking in the Cayman Islands, our political bribes. When Mateo and my wife, Sofia, were killed in that fiery crash on the Jersey Turnpike, Marcus had been the one to handle the funeral arrangements. He had hugged me at the gravesite, crying on my shoulder, swearing he would help me find whoever tampered with Sofia’s brakes.

"Marcus told me Sofia died instantly," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying stillness of an approaching hurricane. "He told me the body of my son was incinerated beyond recognition."

"It was a setup, Mr. Moretti," Elena sobbed, hiding her face in her hands. "Sofia didn't die in that car crash. She was pregnant when she tried to run away from you... run away from the Mafia."

I froze. "What?"

"Sofia knew you were bringing Mateo into the business," Elena whispered, looking up through tear-stained lashes. "She was terrified. She went to Marcus six months before the accident, begging him to help her fake her death so she could save her children. Marcus agreed... but he didn't do it out of kindness."

I grabbed Elena’s arm, pulling her up to her feet. "Explain. Now."

"Marcus wanted control of the Moretti empire," she explained, her voice shaking violently. "He knew that as long as you had an heir, as long as Mateo was alive, you would never hand over the family reign to him. So he helped Sofia fake the car crash. He bribed the medical examiner, he put burnt animal remains in that casket, and he smuggled Sofia out of the country to a private compound in Colombia."

"And Mateo?" I rasped, my throat feeling like sandpaper.

"Sofia was carrying twins," Elena revealed, dropping a bombshell that fractured my reality. "She gave birth to a second boy in Colombia six months after the crash. But Sofia developed complications during the delivery... she died in that clinic, Mr. Moretti."

Tears spilled over my cheeks, unbidden and unchecked. Sofia. My beautiful, sweet Sofia. She hadn't burned in Jersey. She had died in a dusty clinic in South America, terrified, alone, hiding from the shadow of my name.

"Marcus kept the boys," Elena continued, weeping softly. "He raised Mateo in secret in a compound outside Bogota, using them as leverage. If you ever found out he was stealing from the syndicate ledgers, he was going to use your own sons against you. But eight months ago, when the second boy—Leo—was born, Marcus decided the infant was too much of a risk. He ordered his men to dispose of him."

"Dispose of him..." I repeated, the world turning crimson around the edges of my vision.

"I was working as a nurse in that compound," Elena said, pressing her hand against her heart. "I couldn't let them kill an innocent baby. I stole Leo in the middle of the night. I fled back to the United States. I knew the only place Marcus’s hitmen would never dare to look for Marcus's stolen child was inside your own estate. I brought your son back to you, Mr. Moretti... hiding him in plain sight until I could figure out how to tell you without you killing me."

Before I could process the overwhelming tsunami of grief, rage, and shock, my desk phone chimed sharply.

I stepped over, my body numb, and picked up the receiver. "Vance."

"Boss," Vance’s voice sounded frantic through the speaker. "The swab results came back from the automated lab downstairs. It's a 99.9% DNA match. Leo isn't just related to you, Boss. He's your biological son."

I looked down at the tiny baby resting against my chest. Leo looked up at me, letting out a soft, milky yawn, pressing his small forehead against my cheek.

My son was alive.

And my brother was holding his twin brother hostage three thousand miles away.

"Dominic!" I yelled toward the door.

The heavy doors swung open instantly. Dominic stepped inside, taking in the scene—me holding the baby, Elena weeping on the floor.

"Boss?"

"Gather the Omega squad," I ordered, my voice ringing out like a death knell. "Prep the private jet at Teterboro Airport. We leave for Colombia in two hours."

Dominic’s eyes widened. "Colombia? Boss, what about the syndicate meeting with the Moretti captains tonight? Your brother Marcus called an emergency board meeting at the downtown hotel to discuss Lorenzo's embezzlement."

A dark, terrifying smile spread across my face—the smile of a dead man who had just been handed a reason to live.

"Tell Marcus I'll be attending the meeting," I said softly, handing Leo carefully into Elena’s trembling arms. "And tell him I’m bringing a special guest."
