Chapter 4 — The Trial of Truth

Chapter 4 — The Trial of Truth

The library stood in complete silence.

Rain tapped softly against the tall windows.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the tiny silver flash drive resting in Damian Hawthorne's hand.

It looked insignificant.

Just a piece of metal no larger than a thumb.

Yet everyone in the room understood that it carried the weight of three stolen years.

Vanessa Sinclair's composure finally cracked.

Her breathing became uneven.

"Give that to me."

Damian slowly closed his fingers around it.

"No."

"You don't know what's on it."

"I know enough."

Vanessa took one cautious step forward.

"Damian... think carefully."

"I have."

"For three years."

"And I'm done believing lies."

The head of security stepped beside Damian.

"Sir?"

"Bring a laptop."

"Now."

Within seconds, one of the security officers placed a secure company computer on the library table.

Damian inserted the flash drive.

The screen remained black for several moments.

Then a folder appeared.

ISABELLA — BACKUP

Inside were dozens of recordings.

Hundreds of photographs.

Scanned medical reports.

Audio files.

Time stamps.

Names.

Dates.

Evidence carefully collected over three long years.

Isabella had risked everything.

One file was labeled:

START HERE

Damian clicked it.

The video began with a shaky image.

The camera had clearly been hidden inside the pocket of Isabella's maid uniform.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

"You'll never see Damian again."

The image showed Isabella standing silently with her head lowered.

Vanessa circled her like a predator.

"You know why nobody believes missing wives?"

She smiled.

"Because it's so much easier to believe they ran away."

The recording continued.

"I forged your letters."

"I forged your signature."

"I forged your medical records."

She laughed.

"And your husband thanked me for helping him through his grief."

The room erupted in shocked whispers.

Gerald Whitaker, the Chief Legal Officer, slowly removed his glasses.

His face had turned completely white.

He looked toward Damian.

"I swear..."

"I never knew."

Another recording began.

This one showed Vanessa speaking with two unfamiliar men inside the mansion's study.

One placed several documents on the desk.

"Once Damian signs the merger..."

"We own Hawthorne Technologies."

Vanessa nodded.

"And Isabella?"

One of the men smiled coldly.

"She remains invisible."

The second man added,

"As long as she's legally alive but socially nonexistent..."

"No inheritance issues."

"No divorce complications."

"No public scandal."

The library fell silent again.

This had never been about romance.

It had never been about jealousy alone.

It had been about control.

The Hawthorne empire.

Billions of dollars.

Corporate ownership.

Everything.

Damian looked toward Isabella.

His heart broke.

"You knew."

She nodded weakly.

"I heard them."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"They never let me near you."

She paused.

"And when you came home..."

Her voice cracked.

"They locked me away."

Damian remembered every business trip.

Every late-night return.

Every moment Vanessa insisted Isabella's disappearance was "too painful" to discuss.

All those times...

His wife had been trapped only a few rooms away.

Waiting.

Listening.

Praying.

The butler, Mr. Aldridge, suddenly stepped forward.

"I have something."

Everyone looked at him.

From inside his jacket, he carefully removed a small leather notebook.

"I've kept records."

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"What records?"

The old man opened the notebook.

"Every delivery."

"Every unusual visitor."

"Every time Mrs. Hawthorne was denied medical treatment."

Damian stared.

"You documented everything?"

"I couldn't stop it."

Tears filled the old man's eyes.

"But I couldn't pretend it wasn't happening."

One page listed dozens of dates.

Another contained license plate numbers.

Another described private doctors who had been turned away from the estate.

The evidence kept growing.

Just then...

Gerald Whitaker quietly closed the legal folder he had brought earlier.

He walked directly toward Damian.

Without speaking...

He placed his executive access card on the table.

"I failed this family."

Damian looked at him.

"I trusted paperwork more than people."

Gerald lowered his head.

"I won't make that mistake again."

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Every document appointing you Acting Executive Chair..."

"...is hereby suspended pending criminal investigation."

Vanessa laughed.

A sharp.

Desperate laugh.

"You think this is over?"

She slowly reached into her designer handbag.

Several security officers moved instantly.

But instead of a weapon...

She removed a phone.

She pressed one button.

A video appeared.

Little Lily.

She was sleeping peacefully beneath a pink blanket.

The timestamp showed it had been recorded only minutes earlier.

Vanessa looked directly at Damian.

"You still don't know where she is."

The room went cold.

Damian's face hardened.

"If you've hurt my daughter—"

"I haven't."

Vanessa interrupted.

"And I won't."

She smiled sadly.

"Unlike all of you..."

"I actually love her."

Isabella gasped.

"No."

Vanessa looked toward her.

"I raised her."

"I fed her."

"I held her when she cried."

"I celebrated every birthday."

Fresh tears rolled down Isabella's face.

"My baby..."

Vanessa's expression softened for the first time.

"She called me Aunt Vanessa."

No one spoke.

The truth was complicated.

Vanessa had committed terrible crimes.

But Lily had spent most of her life believing Vanessa was part of her family.

At that moment...

Damian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"This is Damian Hawthorne."

A calm female voice replied.

"Mr. Hawthorne."

"My name is Dr. Emily Carter."

"I believe..."

"I have your daughter."

The room froze.

Damian gripped the phone tighter.

"What did you say?"

"I've cared for Lily for nearly two years."

"Where are you?"

"I was hired as her private pediatrician."

Dr. Carter's voice trembled.

"I didn't know the truth until tonight."

"I just watched the news."

"I saw your wife."

"I realized Lily belongs with you."

Damian's knees nearly gave way.

"Is she safe?"

"Very."

"Can I speak to her?"

A brief silence.

Then...

A tiny voice came over the speaker.

"Hello?"

Damian couldn't breathe.

"Lily?"

"Yes."

"My name is Damian."

Another pause.

The little girl giggled.

"That's a funny name."

Tears streamed freely down his face.

He looked toward Isabella.

"It's her."

Isabella covered her mouth, sobbing.

On the phone, Lily continued innocently.

"Miss Emily says my mommy is coming."

Damian closed his eyes.

"She is."

"And your daddy too."

Another little giggle.

"I have a daddy?"

The question shattered every heart in the room.

Damian whispered through tears,

"Yes, sweetheart."

"You always did."

The call ended only after Dr. Carter promised to bring Lily directly to Hawthorne Manor under police protection.

Everyone finally exhaled.

For the first time in three years...

Hope felt real.

But Vanessa suddenly began laughing again.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

Almost sadly.

"You think you've won."

She looked at Damian.

"You've found your wife."

"You've found your daughter."

"You've exposed me."

She slowly stood.

"But there's one secret..."

"...that Isabella never told you."

Every face turned toward her.

Vanessa smiled.

"You should ask your father..."

"...why he ordered Isabella never to reveal the truth about your mother's death."

The room fell deathly silent.

Damian stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"The answer has been locked inside Hawthorne Manor's private family vault..."

"...for twenty-eight years."

Before anyone could stop her, she reached into her pocket and tossed a heavy brass key onto the library table.

It landed with a sharp metallic sound.

Attached to the key was a faded tag.

Only three handwritten words appeared on it.

For Damian Alone.

The room remained frozen.

Because everyone suddenly realized that the conspiracy surrounding Isabella's disappearance had uncovered an even older mystery.

One that reached back nearly three decades.

One that threatened to rewrite everything Damian believed about his own family.

May you like

And waiting inside the Hawthorne family vault...

...was the truth.
