Chapter 4: The Day the Truth Entered the Courtroom

Chapter 4: The Day the Truth Entered the Courtroom

The news about Van's pregnancy spread through the legal team long before it became public.

Attorney Mai closed the file and looked at me carefully.

"We don't know whether Minh is the father."

"But the timeline is... difficult to ignore."

I stared out the office window.

The city bustled below as though nothing had changed.

People hurried to work.

Children laughed on the sidewalks.

Life moved forward.

Mine felt as if it had been divided into two parts.

The woman before collapsing in the kitchen.

And the woman after.

Surprisingly, the possibility of Minh having a child with another woman didn't break my heart.

That heartbreak had happened years earlier.

This was simply another piece of evidence proving that the marriage I had fought so hard to save had existed only in my imagination.

Mai interrupted my thoughts.

"The court hearing is in three weeks."

She slid another folder toward me.

"Our financial investigator found even more."

I opened it slowly.

Dozens of bank transfers.

Luxury watch purchases.

Jewelry receipts.

International airline tickets.

Private resort reservations.

Every payment had come from the joint account that contained my salary.

Money I had earned by working overtime.

Money I had believed was helping build our future.

Instead...

It had financed someone else's.

Meanwhile, the media refused to let the story fade.

Every day another interview appeared.

Family counselors discussed emotional abuse.

Law professors analyzed the legal value of hidden-camera recordings.

Women's advocacy organizations contacted Attorney Mai asking if they could attend the hearings as observers.

I declined every television invitation.

I wasn't interested in becoming famous.

I simply wanted my life back.

Minh, however, had become impossible to ignore.

Every attempt to repair his reputation made things worse.

First, he posted a lengthy statement online.

"Marriage is complicated. Social media only shows one side of the story."

Within an hour, thousands of people replied with screenshots from the security footage.

Another comment received more than fifty thousand likes.

"The other side would have been your wife dying on the kitchen floor."

He deleted the post.

The internet never forgot.

Mrs. Huong tried a different strategy.

She visited relatives one by one, hoping they would support her.

Instead, she encountered closed doors.

Her older sister listened quietly before speaking.

"I defended you."

Mrs. Huong smiled hopefully.

"But then I watched the entire recording."

The smile disappeared.

Her sister continued,

"I kept waiting for you to stand up."

"You never did."

Tears filled Mrs. Huong's eyes.

"I was angry that day."

"So angry..."

Her sister interrupted gently.

"You don't ignore someone who's unconscious because you're angry."

"You ignored her because you believed she would always survive."

Silence.

"You stopped seeing her as a person."

Mrs. Huong left without another word.

One week before the hearing, Attorney Mai received unexpected visitors.

Two women arrived at her office carrying thick folders.

"My name is Thu."

The older woman extended her hand.

"And this is my daughter."

Mai welcomed them inside.

"How can I help you?"

Thu exchanged a nervous glance with her daughter.

"We worked for Mrs. Huong."

Mai looked interested.

"As housekeepers?"

The younger woman nodded.

"For a short time."

"What happened?"

Neither woman answered immediately.

Finally, Thu whispered,

"We both quit."

"Why?"

"Because..."

She looked down.

"She treated us exactly the way she treated Linh."

The office fell silent.

Thu opened her folder.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Photographs.

Voice recordings.

Messages.

"I started documenting everything because I thought no one would believe us."

Mai carefully examined the evidence.

Mrs. Huong insulting employees.

Refusing to pay overtime.

Humiliating workers in front of guests.

Threatening to ruin their reputations if they complained.

One recording made Mai stop reading.

Mrs. Huong's voice filled the room.

"Why should I pay them fairly? There will always be another desperate woman looking for work."

Mai slowly closed the folder.

"This may not directly affect the divorce."

She smiled.

"But it tells the court something very important."

"This behavior wasn't accidental."

"It was a pattern."

The morning of the hearing arrived beneath gray skies.

Outside the courthouse, reporters lined the steps.

Television cameras pointed toward every arriving vehicle.

Attorney Mai leaned toward me.

"Ready?"

I took a deep breath.

"Yes."

My mother squeezed my shoulder.

"You don't have to prove your worth today."

She smiled.

"You already have."

For the first time in years...

I believed her.

Inside Courtroom Three, every seat was occupied.

Journalists filled the public gallery.

Representatives from several women's organizations sat quietly in the back rows.

Even law students attended, hoping to observe a case that had already become nationally known.

Judge Nguyen entered.

Everyone stood.

The courtroom settled into complete silence.

The proceedings began.

Minh entered a few minutes later.

He barely resembled the confident man from the birthday banquet.

His expensive suits had been replaced by a simple gray jacket.

His shoulders slumped.

He avoided looking at me.

Mrs. Huong followed behind him.

She looked older.

Smaller somehow.

The weeks of public criticism had carved deep lines across her face.

For a brief moment, our eyes met.

I saw regret.

But regret could not erase years.

The judge reviewed the basic facts before turning toward Attorney Mai.

"You may proceed."

Mai stood.

"Your Honor..."

"This case concerns far more than the legal dissolution of a marriage."

"It concerns prolonged emotional abuse."

"Financial exploitation."

"Neglect during a medical emergency."

She paused.

"And a systematic effort to reduce one human being into unpaid domestic labor."

The courtroom became perfectly still.

One by one, the evidence appeared.

Medical records.

Financial documents.

Bank transfers.

Hotel receipts.

Screenshots of Minh's messages with Van.

Employment records proving my salary had funded the household.

Photographs showing years of unpaid work during family gatherings.

Then...

The security footage.

Although everyone had already seen it online...

Watching it inside a courtroom felt different.

More serious.

More permanent.

Every second was carefully documented.

Every timestamp verified.

Every voice unmistakable.

The silence afterward seemed endless.

Judge Nguyen removed his glasses.

He looked toward Minh.

"Do you dispute the authenticity of this recording?"

Minh stood slowly.

His attorney whispered something.

Minh swallowed.

"No, Your Honor."

The judge nodded.

"Do you dispute that the woman lying unconscious is your wife?"

"No."

"Do you dispute stepping over her without providing assistance?"

Another long silence.

Finally...

"No."

The judge wrote several notes.

The scratching of his pen sounded louder than any shouting could have.

Attorney Mai called the first witness.

Mrs. Lan.

The elderly neighbor walked carefully to the witness stand.

She promised to tell the truth.

Then she described everything she had seen.

"I knocked."

"No one answered."

"So I entered through the open back door."

She looked toward the judge.

"I believed she had died."

Her voice trembled.

"I've never forgotten how cold her hands felt."

Many people in the courtroom quietly wiped away tears.

The second witness surprised everyone.

It was Mr. Tran.

Minh's former business partner.

He testified not about business...

But about character.

"I attended the birthday banquet."

"I saw the recording."

"I personally reviewed the original files afterward."

He turned toward the judge.

"I ended our partnership because integrity matters."

The statement landed like a hammer.

Then came an even greater surprise.

Van entered the courtroom.

Whispers spread instantly through the gallery.

Minh looked horrified.

He clearly hadn't expected her.

She walked calmly to the witness stand.

Attorney Mai looked just as surprised.

The judge asked,

"Are you appearing voluntarily?"

"Yes, Your Honor."

"Why?"

Van looked toward me.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Because she deserves the truth."

The courtroom leaned forward.

Van took a slow breath.

"When I met Minh..."

"He told me he was practically divorced."

"He said his wife refused to leave."

"He said they lived separate lives."

She paused.

"I believed him."

She looked down.

"I didn't know she was cooking for him every day."

"I didn't know she gave him her entire salary."

"I didn't know..."

Her voice broke.

"...that she nearly died while he was with me."

Complete silence.

Van wiped away tears.

"I ended the relationship the day I watched the video."

Then she placed an envelope on the witness stand.

Attorney Mai opened it.

Inside were printed conversations.

Messages.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Everything.

Van had voluntarily handed over every piece of evidence she possessed.

Including proof that Minh had promised to divorce me years earlier while continuing to use my income to finance both relationships.

Minh buried his face in his hands.

After several hours of testimony, the judge called for a short recess.

Outside the courtroom, reporters rushed to file updates.

Inside the hallway, Minh finally approached me.

He looked exhausted.

"Linh..."

I stopped walking.

He struggled to meet my eyes.

"I know saying sorry isn't enough."

"No."

"It isn't."

He nodded slowly.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"I just..."

His voice cracked.

"I don't know how I became this person."

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I answered quietly.

"You didn't become this person overnight."

"You became this person one choice at a time."

"The day you ignored my tears."

"The day you let your mother insult me."

"The day you spent my salary on someone else."

"The day you stepped over me."

I took one step back.

"And every day you decided doing nothing was easier than doing the right thing."

He closed his eyes.

There was nothing left to say.

That afternoon, everyone returned to the courtroom for the judge's preliminary ruling.

Judge Nguyen looked around the room before speaking.

"This court has reviewed substantial evidence."

"The authenticity of the recordings has not been disputed."

"The financial documentation appears comprehensive."

He paused.

"The conduct displayed in the evidence represents a profound violation of marital responsibility."

The room remained silent.

"The court therefore orders the immediate continuation of the asset preservation measures already in place."

He turned toward Minh.

"You are prohibited from transferring, selling, hiding, or otherwise disposing of marital assets until final judgment."

Then he looked toward both legal teams.

"A final hearing will be scheduled after completion of the remaining financial evaluation."

He struck the gavel once.

"Court is adjourned."

As everyone began to stand, Attorney Mai's phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

Her expression changed instantly.

"What is it?" I whispered.

She looked at me in disbelief.

"Our forensic accountant just uncovered another account."

"What account?"

She lowered her voice.

"A secret investment account."

"Opened five years ago."

My heart skipped.

"How much is in it?"

Mai stared at the report before answering.

"Enough..."

"...to change the entire outcome of this divorce."

The battle was not over.

May you like

In fact...

The greatest betrayal had only just been discovered.
