Chapter 8 - The Gala Exposure

The Grand Plaza Hotel was a glittering palace of glass and gold, filled with the city’s elite. Men in tuxedos and women in elegant gowns sipped champagne, laughing and talking while a classical string quartet played softly in the background. At the center of the room stood Victor Sterling, looking every bit the noble billionaire, flashing a polished smile for the flashing cameras of the local press.
He had no idea that forty miles away, his hit squad lay neutralized in a gravel driveway.
I walked through the front doors of the ballroom wearing a tailored tuxedo I had intercepted from a high-end rental shop down the street. My military posture made me blend in with the private security details patrolling the perimeter. No one questioned me as I moved toward the tech booth at the back of the hall.
The technician in charge of the massive video screens was a young guy, distracted by his phone. I stepped into the booth, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder.
"Step away from the console, son," I said softly, letting him see the handle of my Glock beneath my jacket.
He swallowed hard and raised his hands, stepping back without a word.
I plugged my military tablet into the main media server. The video screens behind the stage, which had been displaying images of Sterling’s charitable works, suddenly flickered and went dark.
The crowd stopped talking, murmuring in confusion as the music died.
Victor Sterling turned toward the stage, his brow furrowing as the massive, thirty-foot LED screens flickered back to life. But they weren't showing pictures of orphanages or hospitals.
They were showing the bank ledger from Vance & Associates. They were showing the wire transfers from Meridian Development to Judge Abernathy’s offshore accounts. And then, a massive audio file began to play through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art sound system.
It was the recorded confession of Richard Vance, his voice echoing clearly through the vaulted ceiling.
"Victor Sterling ordered the hit on Emma Mercer. He told Grant Cole to eliminate her because she found the digital ledger. Sterling owns Judge Abernathy... we’ve been washing his money for ten years..."
The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos.
Socialites gasped, dropping their champagne glasses. The journalists and news cameras immediately turned away from the stage and rushed toward Sterling, their flashes blinding as they demanded answers.
Sterling’s polished smile shattered. His face turned a deep, furious crimson as he realized his empire was collapsing in real-time in front of every major donor and media outlet in the state.
"Turn it off!" Sterling screamed at his security guards. "Turn it off now!"
His head security guard, a massive man with a scarred neck, spotted me in the tech booth. He drew a weapon from beneath his jacket and started rushing down the aisle.
I didn't wait for him. I stepped out of the booth, drawing my own weapon, and fired a single, precise shot into the main projector control panel on the ceiling. The panel exploded in a shower of sparks, plunging the ballroom into emergency lighting and chaotic shadow.
I moved through the screaming crowd like a ghost, heading for the exit.
As I reached the lobby, the glass doors burst open. It wasn't the local police. It was a tactical team from the FBI, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Vance and Detective Miller.
Miller saw me amid the fleeing crowd. He didn't raise his weapon. He just gave me a tired, appreciative smirk.
"We got the ledger from Marcus, Daniel," Miller said as his team swarmed past me into the ballroom to arrest Sterling. "And the federal judge just signed warrants for Judge Abernathy and Lena Cole’s legal team. They’re all done."

"Where’s Emma?" I asked, ignoring the chaos behind me.
"She’s outside in my car," Miller said. "Safe."
