Chapter 4 - The Public Fall

The venue for Vanessa’s bridal shower was the Grand Plaza Hotel—the same venue where she had pushed me down the stairs just days prior. It was a sickening display of wealth, complete with thousands of white roses, crystal chandeliers, and a guest list featuring the city’s elite.
My parents had insisted on proceeding with the event, desperately trying to project an image of normalcy to save their plummeting stock prices.
I arrived in my wheelchair, pushed by Detective Vance in plain clothes.
As we entered the grand ballroom, the chatter died down instantly. All eyes turned to me. I wore a simple black dress, a stark contrast to Vanessa’s extravagant white lace gown.
My mother rushed over, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup. “Lena! What are you doing here? You look terrible. Please, go home. We’ll talk about your trust fund later—”
“The trust fund is frozen, Mother,” I said loud enough for the nearby guests to hear. “The State Attorney General’s office has placed a temporary hold on all Hale Partners accounts pending an investigation into money laundering and tax evasion.”
My father, who had been speaking with Grant’s father near the bar, choked on his drink. “What did you say?”
“I spent the last 48 hours auditing our family’s corporate tax filings,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “It turns out, writing off Vanessa’s $150,000 hush-money payment as a 'consulting fee' for a fake logistics company is a federal crime. And so is the offshore account you used to funnel money to her.”
Vanessa stepped forward, her champagne glass trembling so violently the liquid spilled over her manicured fingers. “You’re lying! You’re just jealous because no one has ever loved you! You’re a cripple and a liar!”
“I might be temporarily in a wheelchair, Vanessa,” I said, my voice echoing in the silent ballroom. “But I can stand on my own two feet legally. Can you?”
The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
Four uniformed police officers, accompanied by two state investigators, walked in. The lead officer held a pair of handcuffs.
“Vanessa Hale,” the officer announced, his voice booming. “You are under arrest for aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit witness tampering, and attempted second-degree murder stemming from an incident in October 2021.”
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
Grant’s father stepped back, grabbing his son by the arm and dragging him away from Vanessa. “We’re done. The wedding is off,” he barked at my father.
Vanessa screamed—a raw, ugly sound that stripped away every ounce of her carefully constructed elegance. She lunged toward me, but Detective Vance stepped in front of my wheelchair, blocking her easily as the officers grabbed her arms, pinning her hands behind her back.

“Mom! Dad! Do something!” Vanessa shrieked as the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists. “She did this to me! Lena did this!”
But my parents did nothing. They stood frozen, watching their golden child being paraded out of the ballroom in handcuffs, while the cameras of their high-society friends captured every single moment on video.
