CHAPTER 2 — The Red Light Above the Truth

CHAPTER 2 — The Red Light Above the Truth
The ambulance siren grew louder outside the Whitmore Hotel, but inside the ballroom, nothing moved.
Evelyn didn’t look at her parents anymore.
She didn’t look at the guests whispering behind their hands.
She only looked at Preston.
For the first time, he didn’t look untouchable.
His eyes flicked toward the entrance where the tiny red CCTV light blinked above the archway.
Just once.
That was enough.
A flicker of doubt.
But then his jaw tightened again.
“This is ridiculous,” he said loudly. “She tripped. She’s overreacting. You’re all making a spectacle out of nothing.”
The room hesitated.
Because that was what Preston always did—rewrite reality until other people started questioning their own memory.
But Evelyn didn’t move.
She stayed kneeling on the marble floor, holding Sophie close, feeling her daughter’s small heartbeat against her chest.
Then she spoke again.
“No one leaves this room,” she said quietly.
Her voice wasn’t loud.
But it cut through the noise.
A hotel manager stepped forward nervously. “Ma’am, we need to—”
“Check the footage,” Evelyn interrupted.
Silence again.
The phrase landed differently this time.
Check the footage.
Preston laughed once, short and sharp.
“Do it,” he said. “Waste your time. You’ll see exactly what I said.”
But his fingers were now clenched.
May you like
Because he hadn’t counted on one thing.
Evelyn wasn’t alone anymore.
