Chapter 4 - The Legal War and Public Exposure

Within a week, the scandal reached its boiling point.
The state prosecutor’s office acted swiftly on the evidence Amanda Vance and I had provided. FBI agents descended upon the Aranda estate on a quiet Tuesday morning, arresting Teresa Aranda and Paulina Mier on charges of wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny.
The media circus was unprecedented. Cameras captured the moment a pale, disheveled Teresa was led out of her mansion in handcuffs, shielding her face from the flashing lights. Paulina, sobbing hysterically, tried to hide behind her designer handbag as she was pushed into the back of a police cruiser.
I watched the news broadcast from the quiet comfort of my parents’ living room. For the first time in a year, the heavy weight on my chest felt completely gone.
"They got what they deserved," my mother said, placing a warm cup of tea in front of me. "They tried to use their wealth to crush you, but they ended up destroying themselves."
"This is just the beginning, Mom," I said. "The civil suit is next. Rodrigo has been cooperating fully. He turned over all his personal emails, bank records, and the phone messages Teresa sent him. He's testifying against his own mother."
"Do you think he's doing it to win you back?" my father asked, looking up from his newspaper.
"It doesn't matter why he's doing it," I replied. "What matters is that the truth is recorded in a court of law. Lucía will grow up knowing her mother fought for her dignity, and that her father, however late, finally stood up for what was right."
The court hearings began a month later. The courtroom was packed with journalists, curious members of high society, and legal analysts.
Teresa sat at the defense table, her high-society friends completely absent. She looked older, her skin sallow, the arrogant sparkle in her eyes replaced by a cold, desperate panic. Paulina sat beside her, her lawyers frantically whispering in her ear.
When it was my turn to take the stand, I walked up with absolute confidence. I wore a simple, elegant dark blue suit. I didn't look like the victim they had tried to make me. I looked like a woman who had taken control of her own destiny.
My attorney questioned me about the sequence of events—the constant emotional abuse, the orchestrated campaign to cast doubt on Lucía’s paternity, and finally, the conspiracy to drain the family trust.
"Mrs. Salgado," Paulina’s defense attorney stood up, attempting to shake my resolve. "Is it not true that you are simply using this situation to secure a massive financial settlement from the Aranda estate? Is this not a calculated move by a woman from a less fortunate background to climb the social ladder?"
A quiet murmur rippled through the courtroom.
I looked at the attorney, then turned my gaze directly to the judge.
"If I cared about the Aranda money," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the microphone, "I would have stayed silent. I would have let Teresa insult me, I would have let Rodrigo doubt me, and I would have played the quiet, submissive wife just to keep access to their bank accounts. But I didn't. I walked away from their mansion. I walked away from their country clubs. I am asking for child support for my daughter—which is her legal right—but as for myself, I have waived all spousal support. I do not want a single cent of the Aranda legacy. I have my dignity, and that is something their millions could never buy."
The courtroom erupted into whispers. The judge nodded, a look of profound respect on his face.
When Rodrigo took the stand, he didn't look at his mother once. He spoke clearly, confirming every detail of the emotional manipulation, the forged signatures, and the absolute betrayal he had suffered at the hands of Teresa and Paulina.

"I was a coward," Rodrigo said, his voice choking as he looked toward the back of the courtroom where I sat. "I let my mother’s obsession with status blind me to the truth. I allowed her to hurt the woman I loved and the daughter I dreamed of having. My mother and Paulina Mier stole my money, but more importantly, they stole my family. I want them held fully accountable."
Teresa let out a sharp gasp, burying her face in her hands as her own son’s words sealed her fate.
