Chapter 2: The Collapse of the Montgomery Empire

Chapter 2: The Collapse of the Montgomery Empire

The fallout was catastrophic and instantaneous.

By the time I was tucking Leo, Lucas, and Lily into their custom-built beds in the Whitmore penthouse that evening, the internet had already exploded. Someone at the wedding had live-streamed the entire confrontation. "The Barren Bride Returns as a Billionaire" was trending across every social media platform.

But public humiliation was only the first wave of Ryan and Rebecca’s punishment. Alexander Whitmore, a man who had loved my mother fiercely and treated me as his own daughter, was a ruthless businessman. He had spent the last three years quietly acquiring every debt, every loan, and every mortgage associated with Montgomery Enterprises.

Two days after the ruined wedding, Ryan sat in a dingy, fluorescent-lit lawyer's office. I sat across from him, flanked by Alexander's top legal sharks.

Ryan looked like a ghost. He hadn't shaved, his eyes were bloodshot, and he smelled faintly of cheap scotch.

"Mariana, please," he begged, his hands trembling as he slid a document across the table. "I'll do anything. I'll sign over whatever you want. Just let me see them. Let me see my kids."

"They aren't your kids," I replied, not touching the paper. "A father is someone who protects his family. You are just a sperm donor who evicted a pregnant woman."

"Vanessa left me," he blurted out, a tear sliding down his cheek. "The moment she found out my accounts were frozen, she packed her bags and went back to her ex-boyfriend. She never loved me. Not the way you did."

"I don't care, Ryan."

"And my mother... she's losing her mind. She tried to go to your children's preschool yesterday."

My blood ran cold. The calm demeanor I had maintained shattered. I leaned across the table, my voice a deadly hiss. "If that miserable woman ever comes within a hundred feet of my children again, I will not use lawyers. Do you understand me? I will ruin her so completely she won't be able to afford the pearls around her neck."

"She was arrested for trespassing," Ryan whispered, hanging his head. "Mariana, my company is bankrupt. Whitmore Enterprises called in all the loans. The estate is gone. My cars are repossessed. I have nothing."

"You have exactly what you deserve," I stated simply.

I stood up, smoothing down my tailored blazer. "For eleven years, I apologized for my body. For eleven years, I let your mother insult me at the dinner table while you looked at your phone. I injected myself with hormones until I bruised. I cried on bathroom floors holding negative tests while you complained that my depression was ruining your mood. You broke me, Ryan. But you made one fatal mistake."

He looked up, pathetic and broken. "What?"

"You didn't make sure I stayed broken."

I walked out of the office, stepping into the bright Los Angeles sunshine. For the first time in my life, I felt completely, overwhelmingly free.

The next few months were a masterclass in karma. Montgomery Enterprises was officially liquidated. Rebecca Montgomery, unable to maintain her country club lifestyle, was forced to move into a tiny, run-down apartment in a bad neighborhood, relying on food stamps and the charity of the few friends who hadn't blocked her number.

Ryan, stripped of his wealth and his pride, took a job as a mid-level salesman at a used car dealership. The man who had once worn custom Tom Ford suits now wore polyester shirts, forced to smile at customers who occasionally recognized him from the viral wedding video and laughed in his face.

But my focus was no longer on them. I had an empire to run, and three beautiful children to raise. I threw myself into my new life, managing the Whitmore-Sterling charity foundation, focusing on funding research for endometriosis and women’s fertility.

I thought I was perfectly happy being a single mother. I thought my heart had built a wall too high for any man to climb.

Until I met Liam.
