Chapter 2 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Kate tore through the ground floor of the Ashford estate like a tornado, her hands clawing frantically at her leather purse. She reached the front foyer, her eyes locked on the massive mahogany front doors.

She grabbed the heavy brass handle and pulled.

Nothing happened.

The doors were locked fast, the commercial-grade deadbolts engaged automatically by the smart-home security system Daniel had installed two years prior.

"Open! Open, you damned piece of trash!" she screamed, rattling the brass handle until her knuckles turned white.

She spun around, her back slammed against the heavy wood, as the slow, rhythmic sound of leather soles descending the marble staircase echoed through the cavernous foyer.

Daniel appeared at the landing. He wasn't rushing. He was pulling out his dark slate-grey smartphone, sliding his thumb across the glass screen with methodic precision.

"System override," Daniel said calmly into the phone's microphone. "Lockdown protocol Alpha. Disable all exterior exits. Disconnect the garage doors. Contact Marcus Vance at Vance Security."

A soft, electronic hum vibrated through the walls as the iron security shutters along the ground-floor windows slid down with a metallic clack, blocking out the faint moonlight from the estate’s manicured lawns. The mansion was completely sealed.

"Daniel! Please!" Kate wept, throwing herself onto her knees, her hands clasped together in a pathetic plea. "I was desperate! Julian coerced me! He threatened to tell the police about... about Emily’s medical records if I didn't help him!"

Daniel reached the bottom of the stairs and stopped five feet away from her. The dim amber lighting of the foyer cast deep shadows across his sharp jawline, making his eyes look like two hollow pools of dark ice.

"Emily's medical records?" Daniel repeated softly. "What do you mean by that, Kate?"

Kate gasped, realizing she had said too much, her hands slamming against her mouth. "Nothing! I didn't mean anything! I was just confused!"

Daniel stepped closer, bending down until he was eye-level with her trembling face. The faint scent of her expensive lavender perfume—the same scent Emily used to wear—filled his senses, making him feel physically ill.

"My wife died of an aggressive form of ovarian cancer, Kate," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "She fought for eight months. I was by her bedside every night until her heart stopped. What does Julian have to do with Emily's medical records?"

Kate swallowed hard, her pupils dilated with absolute terror. "Julian... Julian was her secondary oncologist at St. Jude’s. Before he lost his license for illegal prescription distribution."

A cold, sickening realization began to unfurl in the pit of Daniel's stomach, spreading like venom through his veins.

"Emily’s pain medication," Daniel whispered. "In her final two months... the dosage kept changing. She was always so confused. So weak. I thought it was the disease."

Kate pulled her head back, shaking it violently. "No! No, Daniel, don't think like that! Julian was just managing her comfort! I had nothing to do with that!"

"Where is he?" Daniel asked.

"I don't know!"

"Where is Julian Vance, Kate?!" Daniel roared, his voice bouncing off the marble walls with enough force to shatter glass.

Before Kate could answer, the electronic keypad beside the front door beeped twice, and the heavy deadbolts disengaged with a loud mechanical thud.

The heavy mahogany door swung open.

Standing on the threshold were three men in dark, unbadged tactical suits, led by a tall, silver-haired man with piercing grey eyes and a sharp, military posture. Marcus Vance—head of Vance Security and Daniel’s personal head of global protection—stepped into the foyer. Behind him stood two uniform officers from the Chicago Police Department, their hands resting cautiously near their sidearms.

"Mr. Ashford," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes scanning the foyer, immediately assessing the situation and locking onto Kate on the floor. "We received your distress signal and the audio ping from your phone. Detective Miller is right behind us."

Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with a tired face and dark circles under his eyes, stepped around Marcus, taking in the scene—the terrified woman on her knees, the broken lock from the tea tin lying on the floor, and the towering CEO whose presence radiated absolute, unyielding rage.

"Mr. Ashford," Miller said, pulling out a small notepad. "Your head of security told us there was a situation involving child endangerment and financial fraud."

"It's more than that, Detective," Daniel said, turning his cold gaze away from Kate and looking directly at the officer. "It’s domestic torture, grand larceny, and quite possibly premeditated murder."

Kate screamed. "He's insane! Officers, arrest him! He dragged me down the stairs! He held me hostage in this house!"

Detective Miller looked at Kate, then at Marcus Vance, who silently handed the police officer a small tablet displaying the real-time audio transcript from the voice recorder Daniel had recovered from the closet.

Miller read the screen for ten seconds. His tired expression hardened into a look of disgust.

"Kate Morrison," Detective Miller said, stepping forward and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"You can't do this!" Kate shrieked as Miller pulled her hands behind her back, the cold steel snapping around her wrists with a sharp clack. "My family built the Morrison Foundation! My father was a judge! Daniel, you bastard! You ruined me!"

As the two officers dragged Kate out through the heavy mahogany doors into the damp night air, where the red and blue lights of three police cruisers flashed against the wet driveway, Marcus Vance walked over to Daniel.

"We ran the flash drive through our mobile forensic unit in the van, sir," Marcus said quietly, leaning in close so only Daniel could hear. "Your daughter didn't just record audio. She found photos. Documents. Bank transfers spanning back fourteen months."

"And Julian?" Daniel asked, his fists clenching at his sides. "Did you find Julian?"

Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second. "Julian Vance—no relation to me, thank God—is currently at a private estate in North Barrington. He just tried to access the secondary offshore account through an IP address registered to his firm."

"Is he moving?"

"Not yet," Marcus replied, a dark, professional glint flashing in his grey eyes. "He thinks Kate is still here finishing the job. He has no idea you came home early from Chicago."

Daniel reached out and took his suit jacket from the banister, slipping his arms into the sleeves. He adjusted his cuffs with slow, terrifying precision.

"Keep the police here," Daniel instructed softly. "Have Dr. Reynolds brought to the house immediately to examine Lily and Owen. I want a full medical report, a forensic photograph of every single bruise on my daughter's body, and a complete blood panel for my son."

"And you, sir?" Marcus asked. "Where are you going?"

Daniel looked up toward the top of the grand staircase, where Mrs. Higgins was quietly standing, holding Owen, with Lily standing safely by her side. Lily looked down at her father, her tiny hazel eyes reflecting the flashing blue lights from the window.

Daniel looked back at Marcus.

"I’m going to go collect the rest of my wife's estate," Daniel said. "And then I’m going to destroy the man who touched my children."
