Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

The deafening report of the gunshot shattered the silence of Ashcombe Manor.

CRACK!

The bullet slammed into the heavy mahogany desk, splintering the aged wood and sending dark shards flying through the air.

Before Edmund could level the gun for a second shot, Nathan threw his entire body weight forward across the desk. He lunged over the mahogany surface like a panther, his fingers locking around Edmund’s right wrist.

The two men crashed onto the dark oak floor, tumbling over the velvet dust sheets.

"Nathan!" Celia shrieked, rushing forward into the room.

Edmund fought with frantic, animalistic strength, thrashing on the floor, trying desperately to turn the blue-steel barrel toward Nathan’s chest. But Nathan was younger, stronger, and driven by a cold, righteous fury that had been building since the moment Poppy spoke at the dinner table.

Nathan slammed Edmund’s hand against the floorboards.

CLANG!

The pistol slipped from Edmund’s fingers, skittering across the smooth floor and coming to a rest against the base of the bookshelf.

Nathan instantly brought his elbow down against Edmund’s shoulder, pinning the older man to the floor, panting heavily. Edmund lay there, his silver hair ruined, his face pressed against the dusty oak floorboards, sobbing with breathy, defeated gasps.

"It's over, Edmund," Nathan rasped, his eyes burning as he held the solicitor down.

Celia reached the gun first. She picked it up carefully with both hands, holding it pointed at the floor, her whole body shaking violently as she stood over them.

In the doorway, Beatrice stood frozen.

She stared down at Edmund—the man who had been her ally, her confidant, and her co-conspirator for thirty-one years—lying broke and exposed on her dead husband's floor.

"You fool," Beatrice whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "You miserable, greedy fool."

Footsteps thundered up the crimson carpet of the west wing corridor.

Nathan’s sister, Sophie, burst through the double doors, holding her phone to her ear, her face pale with terror after hearing the gunshot from downstairs.

"Nathan! Oh my god!" Sophie screamed, looking at the scene—the splintered desk, the gun in Celia’s hand, and Nathan pinning Edmund to the floor. "I called the police! They're coming up the drive right now!"

Nathan stood up slowly, dusting off his dark suit trousers. He reached out and gently took the gun from Celia’s shaking hands, engaging the safety catch and setting it onto the mahogany desk.

He pulled Celia into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest. She buried her face into his shoulder, her sobs finally washing over her in a wave of overwhelming relief.

"I'm sorry," Nathan whispered into her hair, pressing a gentle kiss against her temple. "I'm so sorry I let you doubt yourself for even a second."

"I was so scared, Nathan," Celia wept, holding onto his jacket as if it were the only anchor in a storm. "I thought you were going to believe them."

"Never again," Nathan promised softly.

He reached down and picked up the thick yellow envelope containing his father's true will, along with the silver USB drive containing the evidence of Edmund’s thirty-year embezzlement scheme.

He turned to face his mother.

Beatrice stood by the velvet-draped window, looking out into the misty darkness of the south garden where the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers were already reflecting off the glasshouses. She looked fragile now—the icy matriarch reduced to a woman who had built her empire on quicksand.

"What are you going to do, Nathan?" Beatrice asked, her voice barely a whisper, not turning around to face him. "Are you going to send your own mother to prison alongside Edmund?"

Nathan looked at the yellow envelope in his hand, then looked at his sister Sophie, who was standing near the door, holding her mouth in shock.

"The truth is coming out, Mother," Nathan said, his voice firm, quiet, and completely unyielding. "The true will will be probated tomorrow. The estate will be placed under my sole management, and Edmund’s embezzlement will be handed over to the Crown prosecutors."

He took a step toward her.

"As for you... you will step down as trustee of the Ashcombe foundation. You will vacate the manor house and move to the dower house on the north estate. You will receive the allowance Father originally intended for you, and not a penny more."

May you like

Beatrice turned slowly, her eyes glistening with cold, defeated tears. "You are banishing me?"

"I am protecting this family from its own toxicity, Mother," Nathan said, holding Celia’s hand tightly in his own. "You tried to destroy the woman I love to protect a lie. You are lucky I am leaving you with a home at all."
