Chapter 4 - The Recovery of Shadows

Three weeks passed.

The Velasco mansion had undergone a complete transformation.

The gold-threaded curtains, imported silk liners, and heavy scented candles had been completely removed from the west wing. In their place were simple linen drapes, unvarnished pine furniture, and white cotton sheets washed exclusively in pure water and unscented olive-oil soap.

The atmosphere in the house, once choked by artificial grandeur and unspoken terror, had begun to clear.

Mateo was a completely different child.

His skin was smooth, clear, and glowing with healthy infancy. He had gained two pounds, his dark eyes were bright and curious, and his laughter—a sweet, bubbling sound that had never been heard inside the mansion—now echoed down the marble corridors every morning.

Sofía had not moved into the mansion, maintaining her fierce independence. But she had agreed to act as Mateo’s private medical supervisor during her days off from the General Hospital, visiting three times a week to monitor his skin recovery and guide Valeria through his developmental milestones.

On a warm Thursday afternoon, Sofía sat on a woven wool blanket spread across the manicured green lawn of the estate's private courtyard.

Mateo was sitting up between her legs, happily smashing a wooden block against a soft rubber ball, letting out tiny shrieks of delight whenever the ball rolled away.

A few feet away, Valeria sat in a wicker garden chair, watching her son.

She looked transformed. The hollow, dark circles beneath her eyes had faded. Her hair was pulled back into a neat braid, and she wore a simple cotton summer dress. Though the trauma of the past two months still lingered in her soft features, the helpless terror was gone, replaced by a quiet, burgeoning confidence.

"He tried to roll over three times this morning before you arrived," Valeria said, a genuine smile lighting up her face as she watched Mateo. "He almost made it all the way to the rug."

"He's getting stronger every day," Sofía smiled, catching the rubber ball and rolling it gently back to the baby. "His motor skills were just delayed because he was spending all his energy fighting the pain. Now that his body is resting, he's catching up rapidly."

Valeria looked at Sofía, her smile softening into deep gratitude.

"I signed the final custody agreement with Nicolás yesterday," Valeria revealed softly.

Sofía paused, looking up. "And?"

"Joint custody," Valeria said, her voice steady and peaceful. "I am moving into a house in Coyoacán next month. It’s a bright, simple house with a big garden. Nicolás bought it for us, but it’s in my name. Mateo will spend four days a week with me and three days here with his father."

"That sounds wonderful, Valeria," Sofía said sincerely. "How is Nicolás taking it?"

"Nicolás has changed, Sofía," Valeria murmured, glancing toward the tall glass doors of the library overlooking the garden. "Before you came here, he thought he could solve every problem with a contract or a threat. He thought he had to control everything to keep us safe. Now... he actually listens."

She leaned forward, looking at Sofía with a perceptive, knowing glint in her dark eyes.

"He looks for you, you know," Valeria added quietly.

Sofía felt a sudden, unexpected warmth rise in her neck. She quickly busied herself by adjusting Mateo's small cotton hat. "He checks on his son's medical status, Valeria. That is his duty as a father."

"No," Valeria countered gently with a soft laugh. "He checks his watch fifty times every Tuesday and Thursday morning until your Tsuru pulls up the driveway. He stands at the library window watching you play with Mateo on the lawn. I lived with that man for three years, Sofía. He has never looked at anyone the way he looks at you."

Before Sofía could answer, the glass doors of the library slid open.

Nicolás stepped out onto the terrace.

He was dressed in a casual charcoal polo shirt and dark trousers—a far cry from the rigid black suits he used to wear every hour of the day. The cold, impenetrable barrier that had surrounded him three weeks ago had dissolved, revealing a man who looked younger, warmer, and profoundly grounded.

He walked down the stone steps toward the lawn, his eyes locked onto Sofía.

"Good afternoon, Valeria," Nicolás said politely, before looking down at his son. "Hey there, little man."

Mateo immediately dropped his wooden block, let out a loud "Gaa!" and reached his chubby little arms up toward his father.

Nicolás smiled—a brilliant, genuine smile that transformed his sharp face into something breathlessly handsome. He bent down, effortlessly lifting the ten-month-old into his arms, pulling him close against his chest and blowing a raspy breath into the baby's neck. Mateo erupted into hysterical fits of baby giggles.

Sofía watched them, her heart doing a strange, fluttering flip inside her chest.

She remembered the man who had threatened to destroy her three weeks ago in his dark office. Seeing him now—laughing freely in the afternoon sun, his massive hand gently cradle the back of his son's head—made it almost impossible to reconcile the two images.

"The dermatologist sent over the final toxicology report this morning," Nicolás said, looking at Sofía as he settled Mateo onto his hip. "Dr. Arispe confirmed that Mateo’s skin barrier is completely healed. He doesn't need any more topical steroids."

"That is wonderful news," Sofía said, standing up and smoothing down her denim skirt. "Then my work here is officially complete."

Nicolás’s smile faded slightly. His gray eyes searched her face. "Complete?"

"You don't need a medical supervisor anymore, Nicolás," Sofía explained gently, trying to keep her voice professional despite the sudden tightening in her throat. "Valeria knows exactly how to handle his care. He is healthy, safe, and thriving. It’s time for me to return to my full shifts at the hospital."

The silence on the lawn became suddenly heavy.

Valeria stood up from her chair, looking between the two of them with a subtle, graceful smile. "I'm going to take Mateo inside for his afternoon nap. Don Esteban prepared his fruit puree."

Nicolás carefully transferred the sleeping baby into Valeria’s arms. "I'll be inside in a few minutes."

Valeria carried Mateo up the stone steps, leaving Nicolás and Sofía standing alone on the wide green lawn beneath the shade of a massive jacaranda tree.
