Chapter 3 - Dismantling the Shadow

The weeks following the arrest were an absolute media circus. The headlines were relentless: THE FALL OF THE GOLDEN BOY, THE BLACKWOOD BILLIONS BUILT ON FRAUD, and the one that went viral across every social platform: THE PROPER WIFE’S REVENGE.

I chose not to hide. I spent my days in the high-ceilinged study of my father’s estate, surrounded by walls of leather-bound law books. My father, Judge Arthur Calder, sat across from me, pouring two glasses of dark tea. The strain of the past few years seemed to lift from his shoulders now that I was back under his roof, safe.

"You played a dangerous game, Avery," he said softly, looking at the faint, healing mark on my lip. "If he had discovered what you were doing with those financial files earlier..."

"He was too arrogant to discover it, Dad," I replied, staring out the window at the rolling green hills. "Ethan believed his own myth. He truly thought that because he was a Blackwood, and because I was raised to be polite, I would never look beneath the surface. He thought a slap would teach me a lesson. He didn't realize it just validated everything I was fighting to expose."

My legal team, led by a brilliant, fierce attorney named Sarah Jenkins, worked around the clock. Because I had brought the evidence forward voluntarily and had documented every step of my internal investigation, the state instantly granted me full immunity and expedited the divorce proceedings.

"We’re completely decoupling your assets, Avery," Sarah explained during a afternoon meeting, spreading out a series of financial dissolution contracts. "The Blackwood legal team tried to argue that your forensic research was a violation of marital privacy, but the judge threw it out within five minutes. Not only are you getting a clean break, but the court is ordering the immediate return of your personal family dowry, which Ethan had attempted to absorb into his holding company."

"What about Margaret?" I asked.

"She’s throwing Ethan under the bus," Sarah laughed coldly. "She’s claiming she had no idea the money was stolen and that her son managed her accounts entirely. But Elias Thorne’s team found emails between them discussing the transfer dates. They’re both going down, Avery. It’s a total collapse."

I looked at the paperwork, ready to sign my maiden name for the first time in half a decade. Avery Calder. It felt like re-inheriting my own soul.
