Chapter 6 - A New Horizon

Two years later.
The spring sun was bright over the coast of Newport. I stood on the deck of a small, private boat, watching the waves. The gala was a lifetime ago. The pain of the betrayal had long since dulled into a distant, academic understanding of human selfishness.
My phone rang. It was my lawyer. "Avery, the final settlement is signed. The last of the assets have been liquidated. You are officially free of any entanglement with the Whitmore estate."
"Thank you, Marcus," I said, hanging up.
I looked out at the ocean. I was building something real this time. Not a house of cards, but a life built on autonomy, integrity, and the strength that comes from surviving the worst. I had learned that the most dangerous thing you can do for a man like Grant is to simply stop playing the game.

I didn't need to marry again to feel complete. I didn't need the approval of people like Evelyn. I had my freedom, my work, and a sense of self that no gold-printed invitation could ever touch.
As the boat headed toward the horizon, I felt the warmth of the sun on my face. For the first time, I wasn't waiting for a call, a text, or a husband to come home. I was exactly where I needed to be: moving forward, leaving the ghosts behind, and finally, unequivocally, happy. The registry for his new life had been the end of mine, but it had also been the birth of everything I was actually meant to be. I breathed in the salt air and smiled. The story was mine, and I had chosen the ending.
