Chapter 5 - The Breach at Gate Four

"Stay here!" Beckett ordered, his posture instantly transforming back into that of a predator.
He pulled his weapon from his belt, flicking off the safety with a clean, practiced motion. He stepped out into the hallway just as Matteo, his chief security officer, ran up the stairs, his radio crackling with frantic cross-chatter.
"Boss!" Matteo shouted, his face slick with sweat. "Breach at the south perimeter! Gate four has been breached by two heavy transport trucks! They blew the electronic lock!"
"How many?" Beckett demanded, his voice icy and clear despite the roaring alarm.
"At least twelve," Matteo reported, racking the slide of his automatic rifle. "They’re using heavy armor. They aren't trying to steal cargo, Boss—they're coming straight for the main house!"
Lily stepped out into the hallway, pulling her cardigan tight around her.
Maya and Julian emerged from their rooms, their faces pale with familiar, terrifying panic. Maya immediately grabbed Julian’s arm, her eyes wide as she looked at her father.
"Dad?" Maya whispered, her voice trembling. "Is it them again?"
Beckett turned to his children. For a fraction of a second, the cold commander vanished, replaced by a father whose heart was breaking.
"Lily," Beckett said, turning to her with absolute, command authority. "Take them to the panic room behind the library in the east wing. The door is reinforced steel disguised as a bookshelf. The code is 0-4-1-2. Do not open it for anyone except me or Matteo."
"What about you?" Lily cried out over the rising din of gunfire echoing from the front courtyard.
"I am going to finish this," Beckett said coldly.
He turned and headed down the broad staircase, his guards falling into formation behind him, their heavy boots thundering against the marble.
"Come on!" Lily shouted, grabbing Maya’s hand and pulling Julian with her other arm. "Where is Leo?"
"I have him!" Maya cried, pointing to the blue bedroom where Leo was stumbling out, clutching his red truck to his chest, his big eyes wide with confusion.
Lily swept Leo up into her arms, ignoring the strain in her shoulder, and ran down the west wing corridor toward the east library.
The sounds of war were growing closer. Glass shattered somewhere on the ground floor. Shouted commands in harsh, guttural accents echoed through the high ceilings, answered by the sharp, terrifying chatter of automatic gunfire.
They reached the grand library—a massive, two-story room filled with dark mahogany shelves and thousands of old books.
"The code!" Lily panted, setting Leo down near a massive leather sofa. "0-4-1-2!"
She rushed to the corner bookshelf near the high fireplace. She pulled back a leather-bound volume of encyclopedia, revealing a concealed digital keypad. Her fingers trembled so violently she missed the first digit.
"Hurry!" Maya screamed, pointing toward the heavy oak doors of the library.
Through the frosted glass of the doors, shadows were moving. Shadows carrying long weapons.
"Lily!" Julian sobbed, pressing his face against his sister’s sweater.
"0... 4... 1... 2!" Lily shouted, slamming her thumb onto the enter key.
A heavy, hydraulic hiss echoed behind the wall. The massive mahogany bookshelf swung slowly outward, revealing a dark, steel-lined room equipped with emergency monitors, medical supplies, and water rations.
"Inside! All of you, get inside now!" Lily commanded, shoving Julian and Leo through the opening.
Maya turned at the threshold. "Are you coming?"
"Get in!" Lily pushed Maya inside, but as she went to step over the threshold herself, the library doors flew open with a deafening crack.
A tall man in a tactical vest, his face covered by a black balaclava, burst into the room. He spotted the opening behind the moving bookshelf instantly.
"Got the kids!" he yelled into his radio, raising his weapon.
Lily didn't think. She didn't calculate her odds. She didn't remember that she was just a civilian nurse who played piano on weekends.
She grabbed a heavy, bronze bust of Shakespeare from the mahogany desk beside her and hurled it with every ounce of strength in her body.
The solid metal statuette struck the gunman square in the side of his tactical helmet. He let out a choked grunt, his weapon discharging wildly into the ceiling, showering plaster and dust over the room.
He stumbled back, his eyes flashing with lethal fury beneath his mask.
"You bitch," he growled, swinging the barrel of his rifle directly at her chest.
Lily grabbed the edge of the heavy steel panic room door and pulled with all her might.
CLANG!

The heavy steel door slammed shut, the internal lock engaging with a series of heavy mechanical thuds just as a hail of bullets shattered against the outer mahogany frame.
Inside the panic room, it was instantly, terrifyingly quiet.
