Chapter 5 - Against the Clock in San Diego

The transition to San Diego was a blur of high-speed drives, private airstrips, and the constant, tense vigilance of Vincent’s remaining loyal men. Mason had successfully secured the estate and eliminated the rest of Moretti’s strike team, but Chicago was no longer safe. The war was fully ignited, and Vincent had to end it.

But first, his children.

The clinic in San Diego was a state-of-the-art facility hidden in the quiet, sun-drenched hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The air here was warm and clean, smelling of sea salt and eucalyptus.

Noah and Lily were immediately admitted to the private wing. Dr. Vance, a brilliant pediatric specialist, wasted no time preparing them for the experimental gene-therapy treatment.

Vincent stood by the window of the clinic lobby, watching the sunset over the ocean. The threat of the Moretti family still loomed like a dark cloud. He knew Don Moretti would not stop until he was dead or Vincent was.

"You're thinking about going back," a soft voice said.

Vincent turned to see Grace walking toward him. She was wearing a simple blue dress he had ordered for her, her hair clean and falling gently around her shoulders. The bruise on her cheek from Leo's blow was fading into a faint yellow shadow.

"I have to end this, Grace," Vincent said quietly. "As long as Moretti is alive, my children will never be safe. They will spend their lives in bunkers and armored cars. I won't let them live in a cage."

"I understand," Grace said, standing beside him and looking out at the golden water. "But you have to promise me something."

"What?"

"You come back," she said, turning her head to look him dead in the eyes. "Noah and Lily need their father. And... I don't want to tell the raccoon story alone."

Vincent looked at her, his heart swelling with a feeling he had thought was dead forever. He reached out, his calloused fingers gently brushing against her cheek, resting near the bruise she had taken for his family.

"I promise," Vincent whispered.

That night, Vincent and Mason boarded a private jet back to Chicago.

The confrontation that followed was not a battle; it was an execution. Vincent unleashed the full weight of his empire’s resources. Within forty-eight hours, the Moretti family’s operations were dismantled, their safehouses raided, and Don Moretti himself was backed into a corner in his own high-rise office.

When Vincent walked into the office, Moretti was sitting behind his desk, trembling, holding a glass of scotch with shaking hands.

"Vincent," Moretti stammered. "We can make a deal. Territoy, money... whatever you want."

Vincent didn't say a word. He walked up to the desk, placed his gun on the polished wood, and looked down at the man who had threatened his children.

"There are no deals," Vincent said, his voice cold as ice. "You targeted my family. You tried to steal my children’s lives to buy your own power."

"Please, Vincent—"

"I am dismantling the Callahan organization," Vincent interrupted, his voice calm, ringing with an absolute finality. "I am selling the assets. I am leaving Chicago. But I cannot leave with you still breathing."

A single shot silenced the room.

Vincent turned and walked out into the cool Chicago rain, leaving the shadows of his past behind him forever.
