Chapter 2 — The Fake Heiress

Chapter 2 — The Fake Heiress

At 2:15 a.m., another visitor arrived.

Not Nathan.

Not Miriam.

Paige.

She carried a flashlight.

The beam swept across the frost-covered floor until it reached my boots.

"Oh my God..."

She whispered.

"I actually thought you'd be crying."

I looked directly at her.

Instead...

I smiled.

Her face twitched.

"You always do that," she muttered.

"You make people uncomfortable."

"You think you're smarter than everyone."

I tilted my head.

"Am I wrong?"

Her confidence cracked.

For just a second.

Then anger returned.

"Lila deserves everything."

"No," I replied quietly.

"She deserves an Oscar."

Paige frowned.

"What?"

"You really believe she's pregnant?"

Silence.

"I've seen the medical reports."

Lie.

"But Paige couldn't know that."

She swallowed.

"Lila showed us ultrasound pictures."

"So did the internet."

Paige blinked.

"What?"

"Those images were stolen from a fertility website."

Color drained from her face.

"You..."

"...you're lying."

"Ask her due date."

Paige stared.

"Then ask which hospital she's registered with."

Nothing.

"Then ask why she keeps refusing champagne by pretending to sip instead of actually drinking."

Paige stepped backward.

Fear.

Not for me.

For herself.

"What are you doing?" she whispered.

"I'm giving you one chance."

"Before the police discover you helped plan a murder."

May you like

She fled without another word.

Hidden cameras captured everything.
