Chapter 5 - Total Liquidation

"This is a bluff," Daniel stammered, his hands beginning to shake. "The FTC doesn't care about a domestic dispute! You're trying to scare me into signing a cheap divorce settlement!"
"It ceased to be a domestic dispute when you forged federal corporate documents to back international gambling debts, Mr. Vance," Miriam Cole interjected, sliding a new document across the table.
Daniel looked down. It was a criminal indictment, signed by a federal prosecutor.
"The men sitting next to Mrs. Vance aren't lawyers," Miriam continued with a cold smile. "They are special agents with the Internal Revenue Service and the FBI's financial crimes division. They have spent the last twelve hours executing search warrants on every single one of your shell corporations."
Vanessa let out a sharp, choked sob. "Daniel... do something! You said she was stupid! You said she wouldn't do anything!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel yelled, turning on his sister in a fit of rage. He looked back at Claire, his facade of control completely shattered. He dropped to his knees, crawling slightly toward her end of the table. "Claire, please... think about our eight years together. I love you. I was stressed about Vanessa's debts, I swear! The coffee... it was an accident, I swear to God! Don't ruin my life over one mistake!"
Claire looked down at the man who had made her feel small, worthless, and terrified for nearly a decade. She felt a profound wave of detachment. There was no anger left, only absolute clarity.
"When you threw that coffee in my face, Daniel," Claire said, her voice echoing in the silent boardroom, "you told me I could either obey or leave. I chose to leave. But you forgot one thing about my father's company."
She pressed a button on the intercom. "Bring them in."
The heavy boardroom doors opened, and two local police officers entered, followed by two federal agents with handcuffs.
"You're being arrested for felony domestic battery, corporate fraud, and grand larceny," Claire said, standing up. "And Vanessa, the Macau syndicate was notified this morning that Vanguard Capital has officially bought out your debt. Which means you no longer owe money to foreign entities. You owe it to me. And I am foreclosing on every single asset you own, including your apartment, your car, and your jewelry. You have twenty-four hours to vacate."
Vanessa shrieked, throwing her hands over her face as an officer pulled her arms behind her back to cuff her. Daniel screamed obscenities, trying to lung toward Claire, but the federal agents tackled him violently to the ground, slamming his face against the polished wood floor.

"You bitch! You ruined me!" Daniel roared as he was dragged away, his face covered in sweat and tears. "I'll kill you!"
Claire stood perfectly still, watching him get dragged into the elevator. The doors closed, cutting off his screams. The room was suddenly very, very quiet.
