359 The Pillow Fell Over Emily Carter's Face Like a Soft White Cloud... But the Hands Holding It Were Filled With Hate.

The Pillow Fell Over Emily Carter's Face Like a Soft White Cloud... But the Hands Holding It Were Filled With Hate.

Victoria Montgomery smiled as she pressed the pillow harder against her daughter-in-law's face inside a private hospital room in Manhattan. The blinds were half open, and the sharp scent of disinfectant mixed with the expensive perfume she always wore.

"You should have died when you fell, you worthless little nobody," Victoria whispered. "But I can still do my son that favor."

Emily couldn't move.

Her body was trapped in a full cast from her chest to her ankles. She had two broken ribs, three fractured vertebrae, and dark bruises covering her jaw.

The doctors said she had survived by nothing short of a miracle after falling from the third-floor balcony of her family's luxury townhouse on the Upper East Side.

Ethan Montgomery—her husband—claimed it had been a tragic accident.

Victoria insisted Emily had always been clumsy.

But Emily had spent years exposing lies long before she married into the Montgomery family.

She had never been a naïve wife dazzled by wealth.

Before attending black-tie charity galas in designer gowns, she had worked as a forensic accountant for a federal financial crimes task force, tracing fake invoices, shell corporations, and hidden bank accounts that corrupt executives believed would never be discovered.

So while the pillow stole the air from her lungs...

Emily refused to panic.

Instead, she remembered.

She remembered every insult.

Every humiliation.

She remembered Victoria raising a crystal wineglass during one lavish family dinner and saying in front of everyone,

"Some women are born to inherit silver dinnerware... while others are born to wash it."

Ethan had lowered his eyes.

"My mother doesn't really mean it," he always muttered afterward, as though cowardice could somehow disguise itself as kindness.

But what happened on the balcony had been anything but subtle.

Emily had argued with Ethan after he insisted she increase the value of her life insurance policy.

"It's for your protection," he had said. "Families like ours have to plan ahead."

Emily refused to sign until she reviewed the paperwork herself.

Ethan tightened his grip around her wrist.

Victoria appeared behind them, her voice as gentle as a Sunday sermon.

Then...

The balcony railing groaned.

As though someone had already weakened it.

Emily plunged three stories onto the stone courtyard below.

Ethan screamed.

Victoria called 911 with flawless composure.

When Emily woke up in the hospital, Ethan was crying beside her bed while Victoria gently stroked her hand in front of the nurses.

"My poor daughter-in-law," she kept saying. "She slipped. Thank God He spared her."

But later that same night, believing the medication had left Emily unconscious, Victoria leaned close to her son's ear and whispered,

"Next time... you cannot fail."

Emily never opened her eyes.

She simply remembered every word.

Several hours later, a nurse named Sarah Mitchell adjusted Emily's IV.

As she leaned over, pretending to check the tubing, she quietly slipped a tiny black button into Emily's motionless hand.

"Don't let go," she whispered without moving her lips.

"The people you asked for are already outside."

Emily understood immediately.

She asked no questions.

She offered no thanks.

She simply closed her fingers around the device.

Now Victoria pressed the pillow down even harder.

The diamond bracelet on her wrist scraped across Emily's swollen cheek.

"Ethan will finally marry someone respectable," she murmured.

"Someone from a proper family.

Not some lucky waitress."

Emily felt her chest burning beneath the heavy cast.

No air reached her lungs.

A loud ringing filled her ears.

She began counting silently.

One.

Two.

Three.

Victoria's breathing grew faster.

Almost excited.

As though she were finally erasing the stain Emily had left on the Montgomery family name.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Emily's vision slowly faded into gray.

Seven.

Eight.

Nine.

When she reached ten...

Her thumb pressed the hidden button.

The hospital room door burst open.

Victoria instantly yanked the pillow away and let out a perfectly rehearsed scream.

But the people rushing inside weren't doctors.

They were three private investigators carrying cameras that were already recording everything.

And directly behind them stood Ethan...

May you like

His face drained of color.

Two cups of coffee trembled violently in his hands.
