Chapter 3 - The Pretender's Collapse

Daniel set the teddy bear down on the small table by the door, refusing to give up his performance. "Claire, please. You have to listen to me. I haven't slept in two days. I was out of my mind with fear that night! Lily was asthmatic, she couldn't breathe—"
"Lily was coughing," Claire interrupted, her voice cutting through his excuses like a diamond blade. "Noah was turning blue. You looked me in the eye, Daniel. You looked at your own son while his body was rigid, and you told the nurse that Vanessa's daughter arrived first."
"I panicked!" Daniel yelled softly, clutching his chest. "I didn't realize how sick Noah was!"
Marcus stood up from his chair, opening his briefcase and pulling out a blue folder. He stepped into Daniel’s line of sight.
"Mr. Whitmore," Marcus said smoothly. "My name is Marcus Vance. I represent your wife. You have just been officially served with a temporary restraining order, an application for emergency sole custody, and a summons for divorce proceedings in the Superior Court of Maricopa County."
Daniel looked at the papers thrust into his hand as if they were dipped in poison. "What? Marcus, you can't do this! This is a private family matter!"
"It ceased to be a private matter when your actions resulted in a pediatric ICU admission," Marcus replied calmly. "You are required to surrender your keys to the family residence by 5:00 p.m. today. You are barred from coming within five hundred feet of Claire or Noah, including this hospital."
"You can't kick me out of my own house!" Daniel shouted, his composure completely dissolving. "I pay the mortgage!"
"Actually," Claire said, stepping closer to him, "you paid the mortgage using the account I funded, while you stole $80,000 from our family equity to buy Vanessa a BMW and pay her apartment lease. I know about the accounts, Daniel. I know about Scottsdale. I know everything."
Daniel’s face drained of all color. The confident, charming front he had maintained for years withered away, leaving behind a pale, terrified coward.
"Claire... please..." he stammered, reaching for her hand. "Don't do this. We can fix this. Think of our family!"
"We don't have a family," Claire said, looking down at his hand and stepping back into the shadow of Noah’s bed. "You traded your family for Vanessa at 2:17 a.m. Now you have to live with the transaction."
Outside the room, two hospital security officers appeared once again, accompanied by an officer from the Phoenix Police Department.
"Daniel Whitmore?" the police officer asked, checking his notepad. "We have a warrant to transport you to the central station for questioning regarding a report of child endangerment filed by the medical board."
Daniel looked at the handcuffs at the officer's belt, then at Marcus's cold glare, and finally at Claire, who turned her back to him to fix Noah’s blankets.

"Claire!" Daniel cried out as the officers took him by the arms and led him down the hall. "Claire, talk to them! Tell them it was an accident! Claire!"
Her name echoed down the long, sterile corridor until the heavy double doors clicked shut, plunging the floor back into silence.
