Chapter 6 - The True Table

The court battle Eleanor threatened never happened.

When Victor’s legal team presented Eleanor’s private investigator with bank statements showing she was bankrupt and attempting to use the children’s trust fund to pay off her personal gambling debts, Eleanor signed a formal waiver relinquishing all future claims to the family, fleeing to Europe to avoid criminal fraud charges.

The last threat to the Hale estate was gone.

Six months later. Christmas Eve.

Snow fell softly outside the massive arched windows of the Hale mansion, blanketing the rolling lawns, the stone walkways, and the iron gates in a quiet, pure layer of white.

Inside the grand dining room, the massive fireplace crackled with warm, golden flames. A twenty-foot Christmas tree stood in the corner, sparkling with hundreds of white lights, golden ribbons, and handmade ornaments created by five children.

The long mahogany dining table—the same table where five nannies had suffered mental breakdowns—was set for a feast.

There were no formal, intimidating arrangements. In the center sat a huge platter of homemade, steaming hot carbonara pasta, fresh garlic bread, bowls of salad, and pitchers of fresh orange juice.

Mason, Cole, Ryder, Theo, and Lily sat around the table in matching green holiday pajamas, laughing, sharing food, and chatting loudly about the presents waiting for them under the tree.

Theo sat at the corner, eating his carbonara with a huge, happy smile on his face. "Mommy Clara makes the best pasta in the world!"

Clara, sitting beside Victor at the head of the table, felt her heart swell so intensely it brought sweet, happy tears to her eyes. Hearing Theo call her "Mommy Clara" for the first time was the greatest gift she had ever received.

Victor reached under the table, his strong, warm hand wrapping tightly around Clara’s fingers.

He was wearing a comfortable navy sweater, looking around the bright, loud, joyous room with eyes full of peace and deep fulfillment. The dark, lonely widower who had stared at a glass of whiskey in a ruined kitchen a year ago was completely gone. In his place was a man who had found his way back to life.

Victor picked up his glass of sparkling cider and tapped it gently with his spoon.

The five children immediately went quiet, looking up at him with bright, eager eyes.

"I want to make a toast," Victor said, his deep voice rich with emotion as he looked around the table, his eyes lingering lovingly on Clara. "A year ago, this house was cold, dark, and full of storm clouds. We thought we were broken beyond repair."

Victor turned to look directly into Clara’s brown eyes, holding her hand up for the children to see.

"Then a brave, incredible woman walked through our front door in the middle of a thunderstorm," Victor continued softly. "She didn't run away. She didn't yell. She showed us that love isn't about perfection—it's about staying when things get hard. She healed my boys. She saved my family. And she brought us her wonderful daughter, Lily, to complete our home."

Victor reached into his sweater pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. He stepped down on one knee right beside Clara’s chair.

The four boys instantly gasped in unison. Mason covered his mouth, Ryder cheered, and Lily clapped her hands wildly!

Victor opened the box, revealing a breathtaking, brilliant diamond ring that caught the flickering firelight.

"Clara Bennett," Victor said, his voice trembling slightly with pure affection. "You took charge of my house, my children, and my heart. Will you do us the honor of making this official? Will you marry me and be the mother to my boys, just as I promise to be a true father to Lily?"

Clara looked at the four little boys nodding furiously at her, at her daughter beaming with pride, and at the strong, wonderful man kneeling before her with his soul in his eyes.

"Yes," Clara whispered, tears of joy spilling down her smiling cheeks. "Yes, Victor! A thousand times yes!"

Victor slid the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss as the room erupted into wild cheers, shrieks of joy, and clapping from all five children!

The boys jumped out of their chairs, wrapping their arms around Clara and Victor in a massive, chaotic, warm group hug.

Outside, the snow continued to fall softly against the glass, but inside the mansion, there was only warmth, safety, and light. The broke stranger who had walked through the rain with nothing left to lose had finally found her true home—and the quadruplets who no nanny could survive had finally found the mother who would love them forever.
