Chapter 6 - The Verdict of Justice

The judge didn't even retire to her chambers to deliberate. She struck her gavel down with a sound like a gunshot.
"I have rarely witnessed such a disgusting display of parental betrayal and sadistic cruelty," the judge stated, her voice shaking with controlled anger. "Effective immediately, sole legal and physical custody of Emily Vance is awarded permanently to her father, Daniel Vance. Lauren Vance’s parental rights are suspended indefinitely. She is granted zero visitation."
The judge turned her eyes to the prosecutors. "Based on the financial evidence and the video provided, I am recommending that the state upgrades the charges against Derek Vance to felony child abuse and corporate fraud, with a recommended sentence of twenty years. Lauren Vance is to be taken into custody immediately for child endangerment and financial conspiracy."
The bailiffs stepped forward. Lauren shrieked as her wrists were pulled behind her back, the metal handcuffs clicking shut. She looked at me, her eyes wild with rage. "You ruined me, Daniel! You planned this!"

"No, Lauren," I said quietly, watching her get dragged away toward the holding cells. "You built the trap yourself. I just recorded the execution."
As the courtroom cleared, I stood alone for a moment, the heavy weight that had rested on my shoulders since the day I returned home finally lifting. The system had worked. The evidence had won. The vipers were caged, and they would never be able to touch my daughter again.
