Chapter 3 - The Fractured Alliance

Two days later, the tension within the Parker family turned into a public war.

Ethan was sitting in the armchair beside my hospital bed, peeling an orange for me, when his phone began ringing furiously. The caller ID displayed his mother's name: Linda Parker.

He hesitated, his thumb hovering over the screen, his face tight with anxiety.

"Answer it," I said quietly. "Put it on speaker."

Ethan hit the speaker button. "Hello, Mother."

"Ethan!" Linda’s voice shrieked through the speaker, high-pitched, manic, and completely devoid of her usual refined, aristocratic composure. "Have you lost your mind?! I just received a civil summons from your wife’s attorney! They are demanding access to my home security servers! What is wrong with you?!"

"You kicked Maya in the stomach, Mother," Ethan said, his voice surprisingly firm, though I could see his hand shaking. "You put her in the hospital. She is carrying triplets."

"Triplets?!" Linda spat out the word like poison. "She's lying to you, Ethan! She's using some fake medical report to trap you! You are throwing away your family, your inheritance, your entire future for a girl who belongs in a mental institution!"

"I saw you do it, Mother," Ethan said, tears welling in his eyes. "I stood right next to her. I saw your shoe hit her body. I heard the glass shatter."

There was a long, chilling pause on the line. When Linda spoke again, her tone had shifted from hysterical rage to an ice-cold, calculating threat.

"If you don't make her drop these charges by 5:00 PM today, Ethan, I am cutting you off completely," Linda said softly. "I will remove you as trustee from the family estate. I will contact the board at your architecture firm and ensure your partnership is revoked. You will have nothing. No money, no career, no family name. Is that what you want for those imaginary children?"

Ethan closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. For thirty-four years, Linda had used financial leverage and emotional manipulation to keep him under her thumb. Every decision he had ever made—his college, his career, his social circle—had been audited and approved by her.

He looked at me, lying in the hospital bed, hooked up to monitors keeping our three babies alive.

"Keep the money, Mother," Ethan said softly. "And don't ever call my phone again."

He hung up the call and tossed the phone onto the nightstand.

"Ethan..." I whispered, reaching out to take his hand.

"I spent my whole life being afraid of her, Maya," Ethan said, sitting on the edge of the bed and pressing his forehead against my hand, weeping softly. "I let her treat you like trash for three years because I was afraid of losing my inheritance. But when I saw you on that floor... when I saw the blood... I realized that a man who sacrifices his family for money isn't a man at all."

Before I could reply, Dr. Aris walked into the room carrying a brand-new set of chart files. Her face was grave, but there was a flicker of guarded hope in her eyes.

"Maya, Ethan," Dr. Aris said, adjusting her glasses. "We just finished the round-the-clock panel scans. The hematoma near Sac A has stabilized. The internal bleeding has officially stopped."

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for three days. "Oh, thank God..."

"However," Dr. Aris cautioned, looking at us sternly, "you are still extremely high-risk. The stress from this legal battle could easily trigger premature labor later in the pregnancy. You need total quiet, absolute peace, and zero stress."

"Doctor," I said, looking past her toward the doorway where Sarah was walking in with a satisfied smile on her face. "The stress isn't coming from me anymore. It’s going to Linda."

Sarah held up a black USB flash drive. "We got it, Maya. Detective Vance executed a search warrant on the secure cloud server. The video from the dining room is fully recovered."
