Chapter 1: The Woman Beneath the Stairs

Victoria Sinclair stared at Damian’s phone as if it were a loaded gun.

The wine in her glass trembled.

For three years, she had ruled Blackwood Estate with a smile sharp enough to cut bone. Servants obeyed her. Lawyers answered her calls. Bankers opened doors before she even knocked.

But Damian Ashford had just spoken six words that changed everything.

“Freeze every account connected to Victoria Sinclair.”

Sophia stood behind him, barefoot on the cold marble, too weak to breathe properly. Her hands shook. Not from the storm. Not from fear of Damian.

From fear of Victoria.

Damian saw it.

And something inside him went still.

Deadly still.

Victoria recovered quickly. She always did.

“Damian,” she said smoothly, stepping down from the staircase. “You’re emotional. I understand. Seeing someone from your past can be shocking.”

“My wife is not someone from my past.”

The servants lifted their eyes.

Only for a second.

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“She was found wandering near the property three years ago,” Victoria said. “Confused. Unstable. She claimed strange things. I gave her shelter.”

Sophia flinched.

Damian turned slightly.

“Sophia.”

Her name left his mouth like a prayer.

She looked at him then.

For the first time.

Her eyes were the same hazel eyes he had searched for in every airport camera, every hospital report, every unknown body file.

But something had been stolen from them.

Light.

Trust.

Time.

“She told them I was dead,” Sophia whispered.

The room went silent.

Victoria’s smile vanished.

Sophia swallowed hard. Her voice cracked, but she kept speaking.

“She said if I ever tried to escape, she would tell the world I had lost my mind. She had doctors sign papers. She had guards move me at night. She kept me in the old servant wing.”

Damian’s face did not change.

That made it worse.

A shouting man could be controlled.

A calm man was already at war.

Victoria laughed once. Thin. False.

“This is absurd.”

Damian looked at the head butler.

“Marcus.”

The old man’s face turned gray.

“Yes, sir.”

“How long?”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Victoria snapped, “Do not answer him.”

Damian did not look away.

“How long?”

Marcus’s voice broke.

“Three years, Mr. Ashford.”

Sophia covered her mouth.

Damian closed his eyes.

One second.

Two.

When he opened them, the man who had loved Sophia was still there.

But the billionaire who had destroyed corporations before breakfast had arrived beside him.

“Call my legal team,” Damian said. “Call the police. Call Dr. Bennett. And no one leaves this estate.”

Victoria stepped backward.

“You can’t do this.”

Damian finally turned to her.

“I already did.”

Thunder cracked above the mansion.

The lights flickered.

For the first time in three years, Victoria Sinclair looked afraid.

And for the first time in three years, Sophia Ashford was no longer alone.
