Chapter 6 - The Trial of Truth

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity for the sentencing hearing. Diane and Chloe sat at the defense table, stripped of their designer clothes and jewelry, wearing gray prison jumpsuits. Without their wealth and status to shield them, they looked fragile, small, and utterly broken.

The prosecutor played the unedited security footage one final time. The jury didn't even need to deliberate; the evidence was absolute.

When it was my turn to speak on behalf of the victims, I didn't look at my mother or sister. I looked directly at the judge.

"For years, Your Honor, I allowed myself to believe that family loyalty meant tolerance of cruelty," I said clearly. "I failed to protect my wife from the vipers in my own home. But a father’s true duty begins when he protects his legacy. These women didn't just commit a crime against my wife; they deliberately tried to let an innocent baby die to protect their own twisted pride. I ask for the maximum sentence allowed by law."

The judge nodded solemnly. "Diane Vance, for your role in the conspiracy and criminal neglect of an infant, you are sentenced to twelve years in a state correctional facility. Chloe Vance, for aggravated assault and felony child endangerment, you are sentenced to fifteen years without the possibility of early parole."

As the handcuffs clicked and they were led away, Chloe screamed my name, begging for forgiveness. My mother simply stared at the floor, realizing that the empire of status she had built had completely collapsed into ashes.
