Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Trap

The court date for the emergency custody and paternity hearing arrived three weeks later. The courtroom was cold, smelling of old paper and wood polish.
Mason sat at the defense table, looking smug in a tailored navy suit. His mother, Linda, sat directly behind him in the gallery, wearing a pearl necklace and an expression of supreme disdain. Chelsea was conspicuously absent.
My side of the room was quiet. Carter sat next to me, calmly organizing his files. I clutched Clara’s diaper bag tightly in my lap, having left her with a trusted nanny downstairs under strict security instructions.
The judge, a formidable woman named Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation to me, unfortunately), banged her gavel. "We are here today regarding the matter of Clara Vance. The petitioner, Mason Carrington, is requesting a court-ordered paternity test and immediate temporary joint custody."
Mason’s attorney stood up, smoothing his tie. "Your Honor, my client is a respected businessman who has been unjustly blocked from seeing his newborn daughter. The mother, Elise Vance, has shown extreme emotional instability, registering the child under a false name and denying a father his legal rights during a vulnerable medical event."
"He came to my hospital room two hours after surgery!" I burst out, unable to contain myself.
Carter gently placed a hand on my arm, signaling me to stay calm. He stood up, his posture commanding the entire room.
"Your Honor, if I may," Carter began, his voice smooth and incredibly confident. "We do not dispute the need for a paternity test. In fact, we welcome it. However, we vehemently object to any temporary custody or visitation rights being granted to Mr. Carrington."
"On what grounds, Mr. Vance?" the judge asked, peering over her glasses. "The father has a right to build a relationship with his child."
"On the grounds that Mr. Carrington’s interest in this child is purely financial, fraudulent, and poses a direct threat to the safety and well-being of the infant," Carter stated boldly.
Mason scoffed loudly. "This is ridiculous. She’s trying to smear my name!"
"Silence, Mr. Carrington," the judge warned. "Go on, Mr. Vance."
Carter opened his laptop and submitted a file to the court clerk. "We have recently acquired verified digital correspondence between Mr. Carrington and his mother, Linda Carrington, dating back to the second month of my client's pregnancy. These emails explicitly detail a conspiracy to divorce my client, marry another woman to present a 'stable household,' and systematically fabricate evidence of drug abuse and neglect against Elise Vance in order to strip her of custody."
The courtroom went dead silent. Mason’s lawyer frantically leaned over to whisper to his client, whose face was turning a dangerous shade of crimson.
"Furthermore," Carter continued, his voice echoing off the high walls, "we have financial ledgers proving that Mr. Carrington's sole motivation is the activation of the Carrington Trust—a ten-million-dollar fund that he stands to lose in less than two months if he does not have legal custody of an heir. This isn't a father wanting his child, Your Honor. This is a corporate raider trying to hostilely takeover a human life for a payout."
"This is a lie!" Linda Carrington screamed from the gallery, standing up. "That drive was stolen! That bitch Chelsea—"
She stopped herself, realizing too late what she had just admitted.

Judge Evelyn Vance banged her gavel with enough force to sound like a gunshot. "Order! Sit down, or I will have you removed and charged with contempt!"
The judge looked at the documents on her screen, her expression growing darker by the second. She looked down at Mason, her eyes piercing. "Mr. Carrington, these allegations are severe. If these emails are authentic, you are looking at potential conspiracy and fraud charges."
