CHAPTER 4: THE HIDDEN ENEMY

CHAPTER 4: THE HIDDEN ENEMY

The door handle turned slowly.

Not rushed. Not desperate.

Deliberate.

Like whoever was on the other side already knew the outcome.

Lena stepped back instinctively, her heart hammering so hard it felt like it might break through her ribs. The man in the black coat didn’t move away from the door. He moved closer to it.

Between her and whatever was coming.

A quiet click echoed through the apartment.

Locked.

The handle stopped turning.

For one second, everything went still.

Then—

A voice came through the door.

Calm.

Almost polite.

“Marchello Rossi sends his regards.”

Lena’s breath caught.

The man in black didn’t react to the name.

But his jaw tightened slightly.

That small detail told Lena everything—this wasn’t new information to him.

It was confirmation.

Another voice spoke, sharper this time.

“She’s inside.”

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Not leaving.

Positioning.

Surrounding.

Lena backed toward the kitchen, shaking.

“What is this?” she whispered. “What do they want from me?”

The man finally spoke without turning:

“Truth.”

That word made her stomach twist.

Another knock came—harder now.

The door shuddered in its frame.

The man in black reached into his coat.

Not a gun.

A small device.

He pressed it once.

The apartment lights flickered.

Then died.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Lena gasped.

“What did you do?!”

“Level the field,” he said.

From the hallway outside, a new sound—

A soft beep.

Then a mechanical snap.

The lock disengaged.

The door opened.

Three men entered immediately.

Dark jackets. No markings. Professional movement.

Not gangsters.

Operators.

One of them scanned the room.

“Clear.”

Another stepped forward.

“Where is she?”

Lena pressed herself against the counter, barely breathing.

The man in black stood still.

Then he spoke.

“Leave.”

One of the intruders tilted his head.

“You’re not Rossi’s enforcer.”

A pause.

Then a slight smile.

“You’re the mistake from the hospital.”

The air changed instantly.

Lena didn’t understand the words, but she felt their weight.

The man in black finally turned slightly.

“You’re in the wrong building.”

The intruder laughed softly.

“No,” he said. “We’re exactly where she is.”

He raised a hand.

Not a gun.

A phone.

On the screen—

A photo.

Lena.

Taken from outside her apartment.

Today.

Her stomach dropped.

“They’ve been watching her longer than you,” the intruder said.

Lena’s voice shook.

“
Who are you people?”

The man in black answered before they could.

“Not Rossi.”

That was enough.

The intruder nodded.

“Correct.”

Then his tone changed.

Colder.

Final.

“We’re the ones cleaning up what Rossi can’t control.”

Silence hit the room like a blade.

Lena whispered:

“I don’t understand
”

The man in black finally looked at her.

For the first time, his voice carried something heavier than control.

Concern.

“Because you were never supposed to survive that night.”

A sudden movement—

The intruder lunged.

Everything exploded into motion.

The man in black grabbed Lena and pulled her down just as something struck the wall behind them. Not a bullet—too quiet. A compact stun round.

Glass shattered.

Lena screamed.

“RUN,” the man barked.

But there was nowhere to run.

Two intruders moved in from the hallway.

Another from the kitchen entrance.

They were sealed in.

Trapped.

The man in black moved faster than Lena thought possible.

He shoved a small object into her hand.

“Out the back window. Now.”

“I can’t—”

“NOW.”

Another impact slammed into the counter.

Lena stumbled backward toward the window.

Her hands shook as she unlocked it.

Cold air rushed in.

Below—an alley.

Too high.

Too far.

“No, no, no
” she whispered.

Behind her, chaos erupted.

Fighting.

Glass breaking.

A grunt of pain.

The man in black was holding them off—but not winning.

Not fully.

One of the intruders shouted:

“She’s the key! Don’t let her escape!”

That sentence changed everything.

Lena climbed onto the window ledge.

Her body froze.

Fear locked her in place.

Then—

She heard her brother’s name again in her mind.

Eli.

And something inside her snapped forward.

She jumped.

The fall stole her breath.

Impact hit hard—but snow softened it just enough to keep her alive.

She rolled into the alley, gasping, pain exploding through her shoulder.

Above—

A shadow appeared in the window.

The man in black.

He met her eyes for a fraction of a second.

Then something behind him struck.

He disappeared from view.

Lena scrambled to her feet, limping, running into the alley.

Behind her—

Voices shouting.

Boots hitting metal stairs.

They were coming.

She ran blindly into the darkness.

Until she reached the street.

Cars.

People.

Noise.

Normal life continuing like nothing was happening.

But Lena knew better now.

Because the world she was in

Had just revealed its second layer.

And at the center of it—

Was not Rossi.

Not the attackers.

But something deeper.

A hidden group that didn’t want her alive long enough to ask questions.

Her phone buzzed again in her pocket.

She almost didn’t look.

Then she did.

One message.

Unknown number.

“You saw the wrong man die.”

Lena stopped in the middle of the sidewalk.

Her breathing broke.

Because now she understood the real question wasn’t who shot the bullet.

It was—

Who did she see fall that night
and why was it a lie?

Behind her, in the distance, sirens began to rise.

May you like

And somewhere inside that chaos—

The man in black was still not dead.
