Chapter 4 - Blood and Betrayal

POP! POP!

The deafening sound of suppressed gunshots filled the sunroom. Pain—searing, white-hot, agonizing pain—exploded through my left shoulder. I gasped, the air rushing out of my lungs in a desperate ragged cough as the violent force of the bullet knocked me to the polished marble floor.

"Vivi! VIVI!" Ethan screamed frantically, his small hands clutching my bloody clothes. "Daddy! Help! VIVI!"

"Shut the brat up!" Moretti barked callously, grabbing Ethan by his arm and violently yanking him away from me. Ethan kicked and screamed, his newly healed legs fighting with everything he had, but Moretti’s grip was like a vise.

I lay in a pool of my own warm, sticky blood, my vision swaying, black spots dancing wildly across my eyes. My body felt heavy, paralyzed by the sheer agony burning through my shoulder blade. But as I watched Moretti drag the terrified child toward the shattered glass doors leading to the courtyard, a primal, ferocious fury roared to life inside me.

Not Ethan. I will not let them take Ethan.

Gritting my teeth so hard my jaw ached, I forced my body to move. I dragged myself across the slippery floor, my right arm reaching out until my fingers brushed against a heavy, brass decorative statue lying on the knocked-over end table. I grabbed it, summoned every ounce of adrenaline left in my bleeding body, and pulled myself up.

"Let... him... go!" I rasped out.

Moretti turned his head in shock, surprised that I was still conscious. That split-second distraction was all I needed. I swung the brass statue with all my remaining strength, striking Moretti hard across the side of his skull.

CRACK!

Moretti groaned in pain, stumbling backward, dropping Ethan onto the floor.

"Run, Ethan! RUN!" I yelled, coughing up a mouthful of copper-tasting blood.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He scrambled to his feet and sprinted down the hallway toward the panic room Nathan had shown us weeks prior.

Enraged, Moretti rubbed his bleeding temple, his eyes blazing with murderous fury. "You stupid, pathetic little bitch!" he snarled, raising his gun to point it directly between my eyes. "Die!"

BOOM!

The heavy oak doors of the grand hall exploded into a thousand wooden splinters.

A high-caliber sniper round tore straight through the window, striking Moretti’s armed guard in the chest, dropping him instantly. Before the other guard could react, a barrage of gunfire tore through the sunroom.

Through the haze of smoke, dust, and gunfire, a dark, terrifying figure burst into the room.

It was Nathan.

He looked like a demon unleashed straight from the depths of hell. His sharp suit was covered in blood that wasn't his own, an automatic rifle gripped tightly in his hands, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. Behind him, Marcus and a dozens of heavily armed Blackwell soldiers stormed the estate, wiping out Moretti’s men in seconds.

"VIVIAN!" Nathan’s roar shattered the air.

Moretti panicked, raising his weapon toward Nathan, but Nathan was faster. Nathan fired a swift burst of three rounds, striking Moretti in both knees and his shoulder. Moretti collapsed to the floor with a agonizing shriek, writhing in pain.

Nathan didn't even look at his fallen rival. He dropped his rifle, sprinted across the room, and slid on his knees next to my bleeding body.

"Vivian! Vivian, look at me!" Nathan cried out, his voice cracking with absolute terror—a terror far greater than any he had felt on the lawn weeks ago. His large, trembling hands pressed down on my shoulder wound to stop the heavy bleeding. "Stay with me! Look at my eyes, baby! Look at me!"

"Ethan..." I managed to whisper, my voice barely a breath as darkness crept into the edges of my vision. "Ethan... is safe... panic room..."

"He's fine! He's safe! You saved him!" Tears spilled freely from Nathan’s dark eyes, dropping onto my blood-stained cheek. The legendary mafia boss was weeping, openly holding me against his chest as if his entire world was slipping through his fingers. "Don't you dare close your eyes, Vivian! Do you hear me?! You stay with me! I can't lose you! I love you!"

The words hung in the air, warm and clear, right before the dark ocean of unconsciousness finally swallowed me whole.
