Chapter 1 - The Echo on the Marble

The silence inside the trauma bay of Montgomery County Memorial Hospital was louder than any thunderclap.
Beeping monitors screamed in erratic, frantic rhythms as double doors burst open. Harrison Cole walked alongside the gurney, his dark grey suit jacket gone, his white dress shirt soaked in his sister’s blood from his elbows to his knuckles. He did not run—Harrison Cole never lost control of his gait—but his strides were long, heavy, and lethal.
“Patient is thirty-two weeks pregnant, acute blunt force trauma, massive abruptio placentae, vital signs dropping!” the paramedic bellowed, shoving past the double doors into Trauma Suite 1.
A team of seven doctors and nurses descended upon Khloe like an army. Scissors shredded her blood-soaked navy dress. IV lines were plunged into her pale wrists. Blood bags were spiked and hung on metal poles while monitors blared continuous alarms.
“Sir, you have to stay outside!” a surgical nurse shouted, placing her hands firmly against Harrison’s chest.
Harrison stopped. He looked down at the nurse. His face was entirely devoid of color, his jaw clenched so tight the muscle twitched like a ticking clock under his skin.
“That is my sister,” Harrison said. His voice was terrifyingly calm—not a shout, not a cry, but an icy declaration that sent a shiver straight down the nurse’s spine. “And if her heart stops, or if that baby’s heart stops, there is not a legal or physical force in this Commonwealth that will shield anyone in this building from me. Save them.”
“We’re taking her straight to emergency C-section!” the Chief of Surgery yelled from the center of the room. “Page Neonatal ICU! We have fetal distress! Move!”
The heavy double doors slammed shut in Harrison’s face.
He stood alone in the sterile hallway. Slowly, Harrison looked down at his hands. They were covered in thick, dark red blood. His sister’s blood. The blood of his unborn niece.
His phone vibrated violently in his pocket. He pulled it out with two bloody fingers. The caller ID read: Mateo Rossi – Chief Investigator.
Harrison pressed the phone to his ear. “Talk to me.”
“Harry,” Mateo’s voice cracked through the receiver, background noise hummed with the sound of police sirens and distant rain. “I’m still at the courthouse steps. The Montgomery County PD just placed Vanessa Kensington in the back of a cruiser. She’s claiming it was an accident. She’s screaming that Khloe tripped.”
“And Richard?” Harrison asked, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register.
“Richard is standing on the sidewalk with his corporate attorney. He’s telling the press that Khloe was emotionally unstable, that she confronted Vanessa, and that Vanessa acted in self-defense. Harry… they’re already spinning the narrative for the evening news.”
Harrison closed his eyes for one second. When he opened them, the grief was completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating machine.
“Mateo.”
“I’m here, boss.”
“I want the courthouse security footage secured within ten minutes. If the local police delay giving it to you, bribe the chief clerk or subpoena the server directly under my federal authority. I want every angle of those steps.”
“Already working on it,” Mateo replied.
“Next,” Harrison continued, walking toward the hospital lobby, his bloody shoes leaving faint prints on the pristine linoleum. “Freeze every asset connected to Harrington Commercial Group. Execute the emergency injunctions we drafted last month. Pull the offshore wire logs from the Cayman accounts. By midnight, I want Richard Harrington unable to buy a bottle of water without my permission.”
“Consider it done. What about Vanessa?”

Harrison stopped at the sliding glass doors of the emergency room entrance, looking out into the torrential rain soaking Philadelphia.
“Vanessa Kensington put her hands on my family,” Harrison said softly. “She thinks the law is a shield. She is about to find out it is a guillotine. Get to the precinct. I’m on my way.”
