Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW IN THE SHADE

Michael’s heart slammed against his ribs. He pulled the SUV over to the shoulder of the dark access road just outside Oakridge Estates, keeping the engine idling.

"Michael? What's wrong?" Emma asked, her eyes darting to his pale face.

"Nothing," Michael lied smoothly, forcing a calm smile. "Just a work notification. David, take the wheel for a second. I need to make a quick call."

Michael switched seats with David, pulled out his encrypted laptop from his bag, and logged directly into Carter Global Logistics' primary treasury portal.

His eyes widened in shock.

Over the last forty-eight hours—while Michael was away in Chicago and Emma was incapacitated by the tranquilizers—a massive wire transfer of twelve million dollars had been executed from the company's reserve account.

The recipient? A shell company registered in Panama named Vance & Partners Holdings.

Vanessa's father—Michael's uncle, Richard Vance—was the chief financial officer of Carter Global Logistics.

The picture instantly came into sharp, terrifying focus.

The entire plot wasn't just a bitter mother trying to seize control of her grandson. Diane and Vanessa were working in tandem with Richard Vance. They had drugged Emma to create a massive domestic scandal, planning to force Michael to step down as CEO due to "personal instability," leaving Uncle Richard to assume total control of the company while the twelve million dollars disappeared forever into offshore accounts.

"They didn't just want Oliver," Michael whispered to himself, his blood running hot. "They were burning down my entire life."

"Michael, talk to me," Emma insisted, leaning over from the front seat, looking at the glowing laptop screen. "What is that?"

Michael turned the screen toward her. "Uncle Richard stole twelve million dollars from the company while I was in Chicago. He used Vanessa and Diane to distract us."

Emma’s hands flew to her mouth. "Twelve million?! Michael... if the board sees that missing money tomorrow morning, they'll blame you! You're the CEO!"

"Not if I find Richard first," Michael said.

He pulled out his phone and dialed Detective Marcus Reed—a trusted childhood friend who was now a senior detective with the State Financial Crimes Unit.

"Marcus," Michael said the moment the line connected. "I need an immediate border watch and asset freeze on Richard Vance. He just embezzled twelve million from Carter Global."

"Michael?!" Marcus’s voice sounded tense over the speaker. "I was just about to call you. Where are you right now?"

"On Highway 9. Why?"

"Because Richard Vance’s private jet just filed a flight plan for Switzerland out of Westchester County Airport," Marcus warned. "His departure window is in thirty minutes. If he gets on that plane, that money is gone forever, and the federal regulators will hold you liable for the deficit!"

Michael looked back at Oliver, who was fast asleep in his car seat, holding his plastic dinosaur tightly against his chest. Then he looked at Emma.

"David," Michael commanded, his voice turning into iron. "Drive Emma and Oliver straight to the Four Seasons Hotel downtown. Lock the room door. Do not open it for anyone except me."

"Michael, no!" Emma cried out, grabbing his arm. "Don't go after him alone! He's dangerous!"

Michael leaned in, kissing Emma deeply on the lips—a slow, passionate, fierce kiss that carried five years of unspoken love, protection, and devotion.

"Five years ago, I let my family walk all over you because I was too weak to see who they really were," Michael said, looking straight into her eyes. "I am never letting anyone hurt this family again. I'm finishing this tonight."

Michael stepped out of the SUV into the rain, grabbed his coat, and flagged down a passing taxi, racing toward Westchester County Airport before the jet could lift off into the dark sky.
