Chapter 5 - The Standoff in Cardiology

Marissa didn't hesitate. Realizing I had survived the fire, she abandoned the syringe on the floor, kicked open the door to Room 218, and slipped inside, locking the heavy deadbolt behind her.

"No! NO!" I screamed, slamming my entire body against the wooden door.

BOOM!

The door rattled, but the lock held firm. Inside, I could hear my mother’s monitor start to beep rapidly as her heart rate spiked in panic.

"Marissa! Touch her and I will tear you apart!" I yelled, smashing my shoulder into the door again and again. "Open the door!"

Nurses and visitors came running down the hallway in panic.

"Sir! Stop! You can't break down patient doors!" a male nurse yelled, reaching for my arm.

"She’s in there trying to murder my mother!" I screamed, grabbing a heavy metal fire extinguisher mounted on the hallway wall.

I swung the fire extinguisher like a battering ram, smashing the heavy brass nozzle right into the door lock.

CRACK! CRACK! BANG!

The wooden frame splintered apart. I kicked the door open with all my weight.

The scene inside was chaotic.

Marissa was leaning over my mother’s bed, her hands wrapped tightly around the main IV line tubing, trying to disconnect the life-support monitors. My mother was flailing her arms, crying out weakly, trying to fight off her attacker with every ounce of strength left in her frail body.

"Get away from her!" I screamed, lunging across the room.

I grabbed Marissa by her hair and shoulders, yanking her back with ferocious strength. She shrieked, spinning around and clawing at my face with her sharp acrylic nails, leaving bloody red gashes down my cheek.

"She needs to die, Arthur!" Marissa screamed hysterically, her eyes wild and crazed. "We're broke! We have nothing! That land is ours!"

We tumbled onto the floor together, knocking over the IV pole and the heart monitor. The machine let out a continuous, terrifying flatline tone: BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

Marissa scrambled across the floor, grabbing a sharp pair of medical shears from the supply tray, pointing them at my chest.

"I'll kill you both!" she screamed, her breath coming in ragged, psychotic gasps. "I built our whole life! I won't let you drag me down into poverty!"

"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON!" a voice boomed from the doorway.

Detective Marcus Reed burst into the room, his service weapon drawn and pointed directly at Marissa’s chest. Two uniformed officers rushed in right behind him.

"Drop the shears, Marissa! On the floor! NOW!" Marcus commanded, his voice steady and lethal.

Marissa looked at the gun pointed at her, then at me bleeding on the floor, and finally at the hallway filled with doctors, nurses, and security guards recording the entire scene on their phones.

The illusion was over. There were no blind spots left. No lies left to tell.

The medical shears slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering onto the linoleum floor.

The two uniformed officers tackled her to the ground, pulling her arms behind her back and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

"Arthur Hail!" Marissa screamed as they dragged her toward the door, her voice echoing down the hospital corridor. "You're nothing without me! You hear me?! You're a nobody!"

I didn't even look at her. I scrambled onto my knees, reaching for my mother’s hand.

Medical staff swarmed the room. Dr. Evans rushed in, quickly reconnecting the oxygen mask and reattaching the heart monitor leads.

The flatline tone stopped.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

A steady, rhythmic heart rate filled the room once more.

My mother opened her eyes slowly. She looked at my soot-stained face, my bleeding cheek, and my tear-filled eyes. She raised her weak, trembling hand and gently wiped a streak of black ash from my forehead.

"My... brave boy," she whispered softly through her mask.

I pressed her hand against my cheek, weeping tears of profound relief. "You're safe, Mom. She's gone. It's over."
