Chapter 6 - The New Vow

Six months later.

The chapel smelled like lilies and expensive perfume, just like it had on our wedding day. But the atmosphere was completely different. There were no hidden threats, no forced smiles, and no cold billionaire in a coma.

I stood at the altar, wearing a gown of my own choosing—simple, elegant, and perfectly me. The air was filled with the sound of genuine laughter and the soft, beautiful music of a string quartet.

Ethan stood beside me, tall and strong, his health fully restored. He looked like a king, but he held my hand like he was the one who had been saved.

The minister smiled, a warm, genuine look this time. "Do you, Ethan, take Claire to be your wife, to love and cherish from this day forward?"

"I do," Ethan said, his voice firm and filled with absolute certainty. "And I vow that I will spend every day of my life proving to you that you are the most precious thing I have ever known. You didn't just save my life; you gave me a reason to live it."

When it was my turn, I looked into his eyes—the eyes that had watched me from the dark, the eyes that had trusted me when I was a complete stranger.

"I do," I said. "And I vow to stand by you, not as a contract, but as your partner. Through the shadows and the light."

The guests erupted in applause—not the polite, forced clapping of a business transaction, but a genuine, joyous celebration of two people who had survived the worst and come out the other side.

When he kissed me, it wasn't the cold kiss of an heir. It was the kiss of a man who had fought for his future and finally held it in his arms.

As we walked down the aisle, hand in hand, the sunlight from the stained-glass windows painted us in brilliant shades of gold and blue. The debt was gone, the snakes were cleared from the house, and our real life—the life we had built on trust instead of deceit—was just beginning. The billionaire heir to the Thornton empire had found something more valuable than any inheritance: a love that was, and would always be, completely, wonderfully real.
