Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

The Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Transit Authority was packed with hundreds of reporters, city officials, and corporate executives. Victor Sterling stood at the mahogany podium, adjusting his silk tie, his chest puffed out as the chairman prepared to announce the final acquisition.

"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen," Sterling boomed into the microphone, his smile brilliant for the flashing cameras. "Today, Sterling Global pledges to invest five billion dollars into the modernization of our transit systems, ensuring a clean, corporate efficiency—"

Suddenly, the massive digital projection screens behind the podium flickered violently.

The celebratory slideshow of Sterling's corporate logos disappeared, replaced by a high-definition video feed. It was the security footage from Emerald Tower—showing Sterling's dark SUV kidnapping Emma in the freezing rain while her twin sons watched from behind the glass doors.

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the hundreds of guests. The cameras stopped flashing at Sterling and focused entirely on the screens.

Before Sterling could yell at the tech team to cut the power, the screen shifted again, displaying a massive, scrolling ledger of offshore bank accounts. In bold red text at the top of the screen were the words: STERLING GLOBAL MUNICIPAL BRIBERY NETWORK.

"What is this?! Turn that off!" Sterling screamed into the microphone, his face turning an ugly shade of ash as his entire reality dissolved live on national television. "This is a cyber-attack! This is fake data generated by Miller Meridian!"

The heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open. Six federal marshals, flanked by twelve armed NYPD officers, marched down the central aisle, their handcuffs gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.

"Victor Sterling!" the lead marshal announced, his voice amplified by the quiet shock of the room. "You are under arrest for federal extortion, kidnapping, and institutional bribery. Step away from the podium."

Sterling tried to run toward the backstage exit, but he was instantly tackled to the ground by two officers, his expensive silk suit tearing against the wooden floorboards as he was dragged out of the hall in handcuffs, his screams of fury drowned out by the chaotic roar of the press.
