Chapter 2 - The Fall of Bennett Enterprises

Within forty-five minutes of my speech on the podium, the university courtyard had transformed into a crime scene.

Two black unmarked sedans pulled up to the main gates of the campus. Agents from the State Financial Crimes Division stepped out, holding badges and arrest warrants. The public humiliation my parents had planned for me had boomeranged with devastating precision.

I stood beside Professor Hughes near the faculty lounge, drinking a glass of water. My cheek still throbbed where my father had struck me, but the pain felt distant now—overshadowed by a profound sense of liberation.

Through the glass windows, I watched as my father was led away in handcuffs. He looked broken. His expensive gray suit was rumpled, his hair disheveled, his eyes staring blankly at the ground. My mother followed behind him, screaming at the officers, claiming it was all a misunderstanding, while Ethan walked ten paces behind them, trying desperately to cover his face from the news cameras that were broadcasting live across the state.

"Are you alright, Emily?" Professor Hughes asked softly, placing a warm hand on my shoulder.

"I've never been better, Professor," I said honestly.

"The board of trustees reviewed the documents you uploaded to the server during your speech," she informed me, her tone full of deep respect. "Your forensic audit is flawless. The university accounting department had been trying to trace the missing scholarship funds for three years. You didn't just clear your name today, Emily; you saved this university from a massive financial cover-up."

"I just wanted the truth out," I murmured.

"Well, the truth has consequences," she smiled softly. "The Dean of Admissions and I have already signed your formal graduation honors. You are graduating Summa Cum Laude, top of your class. And..." She reached into her folder and pulled out a sleek cream envelope. "This arrived by courier an hour ago."

I opened the envelope. Inside was an official job offer from Vance & Associates, the prestigious forensic accounting firm in the state capital, offering me a senior analyst position starting at six figures, along with a full relocation stipend.

Tears finally welled in my eyes, but they weren't tears of hurt. They were tears of pure relief.

"You earned this, Emily," Professor Hughes said gently. "Every single bit of it."

Just as I stepped out of the faculty building onto the quiet walkway, a figure emerged from behind the marble pillars.

It was Ethan.

He didn't have his smug grin anymore. His designer clothes looked ridiculous against his trembling posture.

"Emily..." Ethan stammered, taking a step toward me. "You... you have to fix this. Dad’s bail is set at one million dollars. The bank froze all our family accounts this afternoon. Mom is hiding at a hotel, and they’re going to seize our house!"

I stopped, looking at my younger brother—the child who had been given everything while I was given nothing, the boy who had laughed when my father slapped me.

"Fix it?" I asked quietly.

"You have the passwords to the backup accounts!" Ethan pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. "Dad told me you locked him out of his off-shore ledger! If you just release the funds, we can pay the bail and hire a good defense lawyer! We're your family, Emily!"

"Family?" I repeated the word, feeling its hollow echo. "Family doesn't frame an eighteen-year-old girl for embezzlement, Ethan. Family doesn't steal her life savings. And family doesn't laugh when she gets struck in public."

"I was just doing what Dad told me to do!" Ethan cried out, tears of self-pity streaming down his face. "If Dad goes to prison, what happens to me?! How am I supposed to finish my college?!"

"You do what I did," I said, stepping past him into the bright afternoon sun. "You get a job. You work hard. And for once in your life, Ethan, you earn what you carry."
